A Tree to Honor Nick Jackson II, by Wende Lynn

Wende Lynn is a resident of Lum Howell, and she, along with several other neighbors, formed a Steering Committee to work on this initiative. Thanks to all the steering committee members!

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote to you about supporting an effort to plant a tree in one of our parks in memory of Nick Jackson II who lost his life in a home invasion last month. The Lum Howell neighborhood and Norcross Neighbors joined efforts to create a memorial to Nick and donate any additional monies to the Foundation started in his name at Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church.

I am so proud to live in a community where people come together in the face of tragedy and make "good" things happen. I want to say thanks to all of you who have already given and to remind those of you that have not contributed that there is still time to do so. The address to send your tax-deductible check (made out to Norcross Neighbors) is listed below. Please consider joining us in this cause.

This past weekend (to take advantage of prime planting weather) volunteers came together and planted a beautiful blooming cherry tree in Rossie Brundage Park. The Jackson family was on hand and expressed their deepest thanks and appreciation for this memorial for Nick. Our plan is to landscape around the tree area, install a permanent plaque, and have the dedication ceremony on March 17 in coordination with the opening activities for baseball season. I will send out the time and details for the ceremony once those have been finalized. The tree is in a prime location between the basketball courts, first base side of the baseball field and next to the pavilion. Please stop by to see how beautiful the tree looks and the splash of color it adds to the park. It will be enjoyed by many for years to come!

There is still much to do before March 17, but I hope you will add this date to your calendar and stop by for the dedication service. Also, please don't forget to send in your donation. You can put "Tree" in the memo field of your check. There are also collection jars at Cafe 45 South and at Paizano's.

Checks can be mailed to:
197 Lake Drive, Norcross, GA 30071
