Actually, having mass transit as a commuter option will increase the value of the area. Which will actually make it even harder for those you think are going to bring crime and bad schools to move there. And if you've been living under a rock for the last 10 years, more people are wanting to move back to the city because of the commute from way out in Forsyth. Another backwards thinker living in the 1960s fear of someone coming to your area, stealing your tv, and waiting for a train to get back to their SWATs home.

That had nothing to do with robberies as MARTA is one of the safest transit systems in the nation. It was because the routes were long and slow and didn't get a lot of ridership. The buses for the 100 and 101 ran every 30 minutes in basically giant loops.

    @ dm
"Projects like this needs to first serve the areas where the density of both touring and working people is most high. I don't think the density of people served by Mayor Reed's project is high enough to warrant the priority he gave it."

So the most dense and walkable area of the city, with the highest concentration of jobs and the most toursit attractions.... which is DOWNTOWN... shouldn't get the streetcar first? Even though that is what you said was needed to bring a streetcar....

    @ JM Hurricane
There is a much greater chance of the Beltline rail getting built versus any other plans in the metro area. One, intown people want it. Two, the city has already invested heavily in the trail portion. That is a good thing when asking for money; who is going to invest in you if YOU don't invest in you?

This is a great investment for the city and will be the shining star in a CONNECTED network (unlike the Detroit People Mover example) of streetcars. This investment can even be good for additional heavy rail and light rail plans. Some people are so short sighted! I guess it was a waste of money building the initial portion of the current MARTA system from Georgia State to Avondale? "The rest will never be built!" How about building the Airport station before the line was connected. "What a waste of money!" Some of you people kill me!!

I guess my thoughts are for those opposed or want development to slow down, isn't most of the development in Decatur in its downtown, where most cities want it? Though it does include a garage most of downtown Decatur is still built up somewhat urban where you can walk. MARTA has 4 bus routes and a rail station there. Shouldn't people encourage the growth of the cities urban core, especially with great access to transit and walkability?

Completely agree with this! The people complaining probably don't even live in the city.

One thing I never thought of though is I wish they would have passed off the streetcar as a hospitality and tourism industry item. $200 million would have done a lot more streetcar building!!

For all those that have doubts know this is the start of a city wide network (atleast around the Beltline) of new rail transit. This is going to be used more by tourist and locals on the weekends but once more lines are added this will become a great connector of the east and west sides of town. Remember when MARTA rail first started it only ran from Ga State to Avondale. You have to start somewhere for progress.

I agree with Chris H; I would do a mixed use development from Tijuana Garage restaurant complex and engulf that whole stretch including Sherwin Williams. A nice ground level street front shopping strip with 4 to 5 stories of condo/apts would do the area nice. Plus a small deck in the back of the complex with an entrance in the middle of the shops but under the apts/condos to get into the deck. Still urban but still accomdating people who are going to drive and the people who would live there with cars.

I think Fuqua's proposal is terrible and anyone who thinks there is any good is not supportive of what Atlanta is trying to do. Bottom line is even mid to high rise development is going to bring additional traffic because most are going to need some type of deck with it. This is ATL and some people are just going to drive no matter how dense and transit oriented it is. That's the case even in cities like New York. It's about developing it in the right way. No one wants to see a hugh deck on the main road unless there are street front shops in the ground floor and is build in a way that it looks more like an actually building versus a deck. Having condos cover the deck and having street front shops is probably the preferred style though. Also having the entrances to the deck dumping people onto the sidwalks along the main streets versus having access directly to the stores will make the area look more vibrant and probably increase sales in other businesses since people would have to walk past more stores versus going directly to their stores from the deck. I don't even think having a Walmart is a bad thing being that stores like that and Target are now doing "urban" and smaller versions of the stores now versus the normal suburban items in the bigger stores. Being that it will be walkable will still encourage some to take the bus or streetcar (when built) to the area.

I completely agree!! For the nay sayers please use maps.google.com and put the address of 570 West Monroe Street Chicago, IL 60661. You can't miss it if you use the "Street View" feature. It's the only one story building around the 40 and 50 story skyscrapers. In the picture is it not a Walmart yet but you can see on the side where they have plans to convert the building.

I would love to see this built. Great for the kids and everyone in ATL. Could be a great attraction for the city too. I loved going to Chelsea Piers in NYC.
