Both players dominated in Sunday's finals at the 2011 USTA Australian Open Wild-Card Playoffs held at Peachtree Corners' Racquet Club of the South.
Floridian Jesse Levine turned in a dominant performance in beating local favorite Robby Ginepri in straight sets Sunday in the finals of the 2011 Kia Motors USTA Australian Open Wild-Card Playoff at Racquet Club of the South. Levine jumped on the Kennesaw native early, winning the first set 6-0. "I was in a zone today," Levine said. "I was just trying to stay with it. After that first set, it was kind of like can I really keep this up." Not quite. But almost. Professional tennis is coming back to town. TheRacquet Club of the South (RCS) in Peachtree Corners is set to host the Australian Open Wild Card Playoffs Dec. 16-18. Eight men and women will compete in the wild card playoffs. The event also features an exhibition match on Friday, Dec. 16 that will be played in a World TeamTennis format with U.S. Davis Cup Jim Courier and USTA Player Development General Manger Patrick McEnroeserving as the team captains. Monday, the first day of the Atlanta Tennis Championships brought together former World No. 4 James Blake and Latvian Ernest Gulbis, an ATP World Tour champion last year. In the featured match played on center court Blake dropped the first set leaving the veteran from the USA down 4-0 in the second-set tiebreak, but then he reeled off the next seven out of eight points to force the third set. With Blake up a break, rain forced an hour-and-18-minute weather delay. After the players returned to the court, Blake won the next three games to take the match 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-2. Racquet Club of the South hosts week-long Atlanta Championships.
When professional tennis comes to the Norcross area today, it'll bring a decidedly local flavor. Not only were Georgia Tech’s Guillermo Gomez and University of Georgia’s Wil Spencer granted wild card entry into this weekend's Atlanta Tennis Championships at the Racquet Club of the South, so was Kennesaw native Robby Ginepri in a field whose seven Americans include defending champion Mardy Fish and former UGA star and 2010 finalist John Isner.
