On May 13, Norcross Elementary School held its special International Night. And, one person in the audience captured the attached video of second-graders singing "God Bless America," among other songs. The school had a day of parading through the hallways, 100-themed classroom activities and more.
"Hip hip hooray! Today's 100 days!" was chanted all throughout the halls of Norcross Elementary on Wednesday. The school celebrated the 100th day of the school year, and they did it with a bang. Teachers and students walked in a parade, wore hats with "100" adorned on them, made necklaces out of 100 fruit loops, and participated in classroom activities that had to do with the big number. Thirty Gwinnett County Public Schools teachers will take part in Gwinnett’s “Teachers as Leaders” Class of 2013 program, and three of those educators teach at Norcross-area schools. The Teachers as Leaders program is designed to provide teachers with cutting-edge leadership skills that will enhance student learning, according to a press release. Gwinnett County Public Schools thanked 435 classroom teachers, office staff, administrators, counselors and media specialists who retired after the 2011-2012 school year, according to a press release. Collectively the group of Gwinnett County Public School retirees have spent 11,233 years of their lives in education and 180 have 30 years of service, 15 have invested 40 or years and one retiree has 50 years in education, according to a release from Gwinnett County Public Schools. First graders from Norcross Elementary School and volunteers from the Nordson Corporation in Duluth celebrated Earth Day on April 12 by learning how trees are used to make packaging and how packaging can be eco-friendly. As part of the Paperboard Packaging Council (PPC) Trees into Cartons, Cartons into Trees program, students learned what’s involved in creating paperboard cartons and boxes and how that packaging can be recycled or reused. Nordson’s Rick Pallante, PPC industry specialist, educated nearly 200 NES first graders about how trees are harvested and processed into paperboard containers. The team was given a plaque for their success and hard work at the Eastern Metro Regional Chess Tournament in February.
The Norcross Elementary chess team received a plaque Thursday for their hard work and success, particular for their win at the Eastern Metro Regional Chess Tournament in February. Capt. Ron Verplaetse, a member of the Norcross Business Association and owner of Petey's All Around Town in Buford, decided to honor the team with the plaque. The plaque, which features the major playing pieces of chess, has a history since it's been with Verplaetse. While being stationed in the Philippines from 1975 to 1977, he came across a local artist who made the piece of work specifically for him. The elementary school more than doubled its donation goal for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
In efforts to helping the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Norcross Elementary School held a fundraiser where it raised $3,120.63, doubling its donation goal. The fundraiser, Pennies for Patients, lasted three weeks and involved not only the students, but the parents and teachers. Their original goal was to raise $1,500. "As the staff, we were just overwhelmed with their generosity," said Assistant Principal Mikka Solomon, who coordinated the project. The project was simple enough: Students were given a Pennies for Patients box that they would put money in and then bring it back to school to add to their classrooms' collection buckets.
