Rotary Club Recognizes Norcross Elementary Student

Jeylin Jaimes-Ortiz was named the club's Student of the Month.

The Peachtree Corners Rotary Club recognizes a student who has done something outstanding whether academically, athletically or through community service. Recently, Jeylin Jaimes-Ortiz of Norcross Elementary was named the club's Student of the Month. Jaimes-Ortiz received the following proclamation from the school: During my career as a teacher, I often have the pleasure of having one special student who really loves learning. This year, I am blessed to have Jeylin Jaimes-Ortiz as part of my class. Jeylin is a very smart young lady. She is one of the most hardworking students in my class. She is very attentive when I am teaching. As a result, when I need a question answered, Jeylin is always willing to give an answer. She doesn’t mind …

Norcross Elementary Gets Pumped Up for CRCTs

Third, fourth and fifth graders shake things up before they start their tests on Monday.

The CRCTs can be stressful for both students and educators. So the administration at Norcross Elementary School gave the kids a chance to release some steam before testing begins Monday. V103 DJ Daminon Lewis got the gym full of third, fourth and fifth graders up and dancing and gave away prizes to students who answered his questions. NES teachers and administrators lead the students in a cheer. The event ended with a "Shake Off" where groups of students competed in a Harlem Shake Contest.

Norcross Elementary to Help Fight Against World Hunger

The school is celebrating its 10th year participating in the Empty Bowls Project, an international effort to feed those in need.

Norcross Elementary School will be celebrating its 10th year in the Empty Bowls Project, an international effort to fight hunger, one bowl at a time. Students are pounding, shaping and decorating raw clay to glaze them over a fire and create more than a 100 bowls that are each a unique work of art.   The bowls will be on sale at the school's Montage exhibit on April 1. At the event, guests will be invited to choose a bowl, which they will take home as a reminder that there are too many empty bowls in our world.   In exchange for the bowl, guests are asked to give a minimum donation of $5. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Norcross Cooperative Ministry, a local organization working to end hunger in our community.  In addition to the …

Mayor, Police Chief Visit Norcross Elementary for Read Across America

Norcross Mayor Bucky Johnson, Police Chief Warren Summers, former Mayor Lillian Webb and 50 other volunteers stopped by the school Friday to read to the kids for Dr. Seuss' birthday.

Last week, schools around the nation celebrated Read Across America, also known as Dr. Seuss Day. Since the holiday originally fell on Saturday, many schools chose to partake in it Friday, March 1. Students and teachers dressed up as Dr. Seuss characters, styled their classrooms and doors after the author, and participated in reading activities. Norcross Elementary School went all out with their Read Across America Day with more than 50 volunteers. Norcross Mayor Bucky Johnson, Police Chief Warren Summers, former Mayor Lillian Webb and Gwinnett County School Board District V Chairwoman Louise Radloff were among the volunteers who visited the school to read to the kids. The school held two separate programs, one for its primary (kindergarten through second grade) students and another for the intermediate (third through fifth grade) students in the gym. Norcross Students to Showcase in Gwinnett Science Fair

More than 1,000 students will participate in the fair Friday, Feb. 22.

More than 1,000 students from 63 schools will participate Friday in the 35th annual Gwinnett County Regional Science and Engineering Fair. It is the county's largest regional event for science learning, and students from public schools, charter schools, private schools and home schools are among those participating. Local students from the Meadowcreek and Norcross High clusters, in addition to the Gwinnett Online Campus, are in the competition. Those schools include:  Norcross Cluster: Meadowcreek Cluster: Gwinnett Charter School: The fair takes place Friday, Feb. 22, at Gwinnett Center, located at 6400 Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth. Students From 3 Norcross Schools to Compete in County Spelling Bee

Students from Norcross, Rockbridge and Beaver Ridge elementary schools are among the nearly 90 contestants who will compete in the Gwinnett County Spelling Bee this Saturday, Feb. 2.

Nearly 90 Gwinnett County students will compete at the district's spelling bee this Saturday, Feb. 2. The students are the spelling bee champions from their local elementary and middle schools. There are a total of 88 schools with representatives at the Gwinnett County Public Schools' bee. The competition will be held at Central Gwinnett High, located at 564 W. Crogan Street in Lawrenceville. It is sponsored by the Gwinnett County Association of Educators. Student participants will register from 7:15 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. At 8:30 a.m., the local school spelling winners will first compete in a written spelling bee contest. The top 12 spellers from the written bee then will compete in the public oral bee. Last year's bee produced a three-time …
