Gwinnett to Discuss 2013 Budget Thursday

The $1.3 billion spending plan is on the work session agenda for January 3.

From Suwanee Patch Gwinnett commissioners could formally vote in the fiscal year 2013 budget on Thursday, January 3. The commissioners, who begin the year with two members who were not on the panel at the start of 2012, are scheduled to discuss the proposed budget at a 10 a.m. work session. If no hitches develop, the formal vote would take place at the 2 p.m. business meeting. The county government reveals the list for 2011.

Which businesses pay the most taxes in Gwinnett County? Well, you'll soon know. Tax Commissioner Rchard Steele recently sent to the Gwinnett Forum a list of the top 10 taxpaying businesses for 2011. Several are related to utilities, with Georgia Power being No. 1--at $123.4 million. Publix was No. 2. UPDATE: Fanning Jailed on Assault, Cruelty to Children Charges

The son of former Gwinnett Commissioner Shirley Lasseter is being held without bond in the Gwinnett Detention Center after an incident Friday in Dacula.

Updated 2:51 p.m., Oct. 5, 2012 John Fanning, son of former Gwinnett County Commissioner Shirley Lasseter, was booked into the Gwinnett Detention Center on Friday morning (Oct. 5) on charges that include aggravated assault and cruelty to children (third degree), records show. Fanning, already facing a federal prison sentence for bribery and drug trafficking charges, is being held without bond on the assault charge, as well as a charge of false imprisonment. Fanning, with a listed address of Bold Springs Road in Dacula, was booked into the jail at 11:28 a.m., records show. GCPS Invites Public to Review Classroom Curriculum

Parents, members of community welcome to review proposed curriculum materials now through Sept. 28.

Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) invites parents and members of the community to join GCPS staff members in a review of proposed curriculum materials. Parents may provide input on the proposed materials by participating in the public review, which will be held at headquarters in Suwanee. GCPS holds an extensive review before adopting materials for classroom use. Parents, community members, teachers, and administrators review materials to ensure alignment with the school system’s Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) curriculum. UPDATE: Lasseter Pleads Guilty To Accepting Bribe

Former Duluth mayor has resigned as Gwinnett commissioner. Her son, a former Gwinnett zoning official, pleaded guilty to bribery and drug trafficking charges.

 Updated June 1 Shirley Lasseter, whose Gwinnett Board of Commissioners District 1 included Suwanee and Duluth, has pleaded guilty to accepting a bribe, federal authorities confirmed Thursday. Lasseter's sentencing is set for Aug. 6, and she faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and a fine up to a $250,000, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Atlanta. The Duluth resident resigned her Gwinnett office Thursday. She accepted $36,500 in bribes from an undercover FBI agent posing as a South Florida real estate developer, authorities said. The bribe concerned her support for a proposed development on Boggs Road. Lasseter is the third Gwinnett commissioner in less than two years to resign from office amid accusations of wrongdoing. Updated 5:38 p.m., April 2 An Atlanta Braves relief pitcher was arrested early Monday on I-85 near Lawrenceville on a DUI charge, Gwinnett Sheriff's records show. Christhian Martinez, 30, was booked into the Gwinnett Detention Center at 4:24 a.m., and he was released on bond at 10:41. Gwinnett Police Cpl. Jake Smith told the Gwinnett Daily Post that Martinez had a blood-alcohol content of 0.130, above the legal limit of 0.080. Martinez was stopped on I-85 near Steve Reynolds Boulevard when his vehicle was spotted weaving and driving 40 mph, the Daily Post reported. Tornado Watch Issued Tonight

Severe weather expected; watch issued until 5 a.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch tonight for most of metro Atlanta, including Gwinnett County. The watch runs until 5 a.m Saturday. Severe storms, with hail and tornadoes, are possible as a strong cold front appoaches from the West. This is the same storm system that has spawned a tornado outbreak today in the Ohio Valley.

Program's Goal is to Save Our Seniors

Effort that helps Lawrenceville seniors make ends meet hopes to eventually go county-wide.

Every month, the living room and garage floors of Fay Josephs' home reflect her desire to help area seniors make ends meet. Household and personal-care items that many of us take for granted — toilet paper, shampoo, conditioner, soap, detergent, mouthwash, denture cleaner, and more — sit ready to be sorted, bagged and distributed to seniors who are living near or below the poverty line in Lawrenceville Housing Authority units. Through the two-year-old Save Our Seniors program, Josephs and a group of 8 to 10 volunteers band together to deliver the goods one Saturday every month. The effort reaches 50 seniors who have Social Security incomes of less than $1,000 per month and wouldn’t otherwise be able to purchase these goods. Eventually, …

UPDATE: Cities, County OK SDS Deal

Joint city-county ceremony is planned for Tuesday evening in Lawrenceville.

Gwinnett and its cities — including Norcross — approved a Service Delivery Strategy agreement Tuesday, ending a years-long dispute between the two sides. A joint city-county ceremony was held Tuesday night at the Historic Courthouse in Lawrenceville to sign the deal, after the county Board of Commissioners and the cities had met earlier in the day to approve it. "A county the size of Gwinnett ... if that group of folks puts their mind to it and is pulling in the same direction, I don't think there's anybody that can lick us."
