Update: 3 Traffic Fatalities Reported New Year's Weekend in Georgia

The Georgia State Patrol reported its troopers investigated 362 accidents as of 6 p.m. Monday.

Georgia State Troopers already have investigated more crashes during this New Year's holiday than last year, but fewer injuries and only three deaths have been reported – so far. During holiday period patrols, 262 people were arrested for driving under the influence. Troopers have investigated 315 accidents as of noon Dec. 31, which included 139 injuries and one death. During last year's entire 102-hour holiday, the Department of Public Safety investigated 296 accidents. But those accidents included 172 injuries and 7 deaths. Statewide last year, law enforcement agencies reported 1,929 accidents with 716 inuries and 13 deaths. Update: 17 Traffic Fatalties Reported Christmas Weekend

Another traffic fatality has been reported by the Georgia State Patrol, whose troopers investigated 685 crashes with 300 injuries.

Seventeen traffic deaths were reported in the 102-hour Christmas holiday travel period,which began Friday at 6 p.m. and ended at midnight, Christmas Day, according to the Georgia State Patrol. There were 685 crashes with 300 injuries and 11 deaths investigated by the Georgia State Patrol (GSP). Other agencies have reported six traffic fatalities, including a fatal two-car collision in Smyrna just before midnight on Monday that claimed the life of a Marietta woman and a one-car accident in Duluth that claimed that driver's life on Christmas Day. 2 Norcross Residents Killed in Barrow Car Crash

Jess Willard Haygood, 80, and Sara Pauline Haygood, 67, died in the collision.

From Barrow Patch An auto accident Monday along Ga. Highway 8 in Barrow County killed two people from Norcross.  According to the Georgia State Patrol, a 2003 GMC Envoy being driven by Winder resident Kristina Marie Brown was traveling eastbound on Highway 8 about 2:25 p.m. when the vehicle crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a 1992 Honda Accord being driven by Jess Willard Haygood, 80, of Norcross. Haygood and a passenger, Sara Pauline Haygood, age 67, also of Norcross, died in the crash. Brown was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center for treatment. A blood sample was taken to determine if alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash. Charges are pending the completion of a follow-up investigation by the GSP Specialized Collision …

Norcross Fatality Among 19 Traffic-Related Deaths Over Thanksgiving Holiday

Speed, alcohol or failure to wear a seat belt are blamed in almost all of the fatal crashes.

From Holly Springs-Hickory Flat Patch The 102-hour Thanksgiving holiday travel period ended at midnight Sunday with 19 traffic fatalities reported across the state. The Georgia State Patrol investigated 11 of the 19 fatal crashes that occurred between 6 p.m. Wednesday and midnight Sunday. The 19 traffic fatalities is one more than in 2011. State troopers investigated a total of 622 traffic crashes during the period that resulted in 263 injuries. Of the 11 traffic deaths investigated by troopers, alcohol is suspected as a contributing factor in 4 of the crashes, and 7 of the victims were not using seat belts. Police Find $300K of Meth After Car Chase

The chase occurred near I-85 around the Beaver Ruin Road exit in the Norcross area.

A car chase Tuesday afternoon in unincorporated Norcross ended with authorities finding $300,000 worth of methamphetamine, according to WSBTV.com. Georgia State Patrol told the news station that they attempted to pull over a Jeep Cherokee traveling on I-85 South, but the driver didn't stop. Instead, he sped off when he saw the lights on the patrol's car. He got off the Beaver Ruin Road exit, crashed into another vehicle and landed in the Enterprise parking lot. Authorities found 15 pounds of meth in the Cherokee. Joel Martinez, the alleged driver and 32-year-old from Michoacan, Mexico, is being charged with drug trafficking and was taken to Gwinnett County Jail. Norcross Driver Leads Police in High Speed Chase

The chase started in Georgia and lasted for more than 30 miles into South Carolina.

A Norcross man led police in a two-state chase Tuesday that started in Georgia and ended in South Carolina, according to the Anderson Independent Mail. Wesley Holmes, 29, has been charged with driving under the influence, failure to stop, possession of marijuana, child endangerment and a seatbelt violation, South Carolina Highway Patrol told the publication.  Holmes was driving a Honda sport utility vehicle with a 16-year-old inside. A Georgia State Patrol trooper tried to stop the man about a mile from the South Carolina border, but he led authorities on a chase that lasted for more than 30 miles. The driver and police met speeds faster than 100 miles per hour during the chase. Holmes was eventually captured on S.C. 86 in Anderson County …

Fifteen Lives Claimed in Holiday Travel

Georgia State Patrol releases final count of traffic fatalities over the Thanksgiving weekend.

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, 15 people died in traffic accidents, according to the Georgia State Patrol website. Last year, the overall fatalities was 13 for the same travel period from Wednesday at 6 p.m. to midnight Sunday.  One traffic fatality was reported in Gwinnett. Other areas reporting fatal crashes include Cartersville, Blue Ridge, Toccoa, Columbus, Forsyth, Villa Rica, Richmond and Sylvania. Despite the increased fatalities, the number of crashes and injuries were actually down from the previous year, according to the data. In 2010, the State Patrol reported 437 crashes and 397 injuries. This year, those numbers are 434 and 247 respectively.

UPDATED: Traffic Fatalities Down During Labor Day Weekend

Only six traffic fatalities reported on Georgia roads compared to 14 for the same period last year.

Updated 4:53 p.m.  Despite wet roads on the last day of the Labor Day weekend, the Georgia Department of Public Safety reported a significant drop in traffic fatalities on Georgia Roads over the 78-hour travel weekend. For reporting purposes, the Labor Day travel weekend is from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Monday. According to the Georgia Department of Public Safety website, there were six fatalities reported statewide during this period. Georgia State Patrol reported 435 crashes with 225 injuries. Last year the GSP reported 360 crashes with 211 injuries and 13 fatalities. Statewide in 2010, with all agencies reporting, there were 14 fatalities, 2,580 crashes and 1,042 injuries reported. 19 Traffic Fatalities in Georgia Over the Holiday Weekend

Travel period more deadly than last year.

The July 4th holiday travel period appeared to be more fatal this year than last, with 19 fatalities reported from law enforcement agencies throughout the state versus 11 in 2010.  The Georgia State Patrol reported 313 crashes over the travel period, which ran from 6 p.m. on Friday to midnight on July 4.  During that 78 period, the agency also reported 230 injuries. The Gainesville and Cumming area were especially fatal, with seven total traffic-related deaths reported. GSP Gearing Up for Holiday Weekend

Troopers will be watching for impaired drivers, speeders and other violators.

The Georgia State Patrol has one primary goal this 4th of July weekend -- to keep the accident count as low as possible. Last year, over 1,800 accidents occurred over the Independence Day holiday weekend. Those accidents resulted in 834 injuries and 11 fatalities. Colonel Bill Hitchens, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety, said troopers will be watching for drivers under the influence, speeders and motorists not using seat belts. “Our Troopers and MCCD Officers will be concentrating on the most common violations identified as contributing factors in fatal traffic crashes," Hitchens said in a released statement.
