City leaders are seeking to add commercial and residential properties slated to become part of the new City of Peachtree Corners.
On Thursday, Nov. 17 in its scheduled council meeting, the City of Berkeley Lake moved to annex 55 commercial properties along with 15 residential properties into its city limits. The annexation has some in Peachtree Corners questioning the decision by Berkeley Lake as the annexations took place nine days after the Nov. 8 referendum was passed by voters approving the incorporation of the City of Peachtree Corners. The City of Norcross had launched its own campaign to annex businesses in into the city limits, but asserted that the deadline to turn in an application was Sept. 15, to give time for paperwork to make through the proper channels before the Nov. 8 vote on cityhood for Peachtree Corners resident. The referendum has passed and the former unincorporated community is the county's newest city.
It was the moment this group had long awaited. Mike Mason, who spearheaded the Peachtree Corners Yes campaign, announced to a jubilent crowd of supporters Tuesday night that the referendum to incorporate the community of Peachtree Corners had passed. As the reports from the precincts came in one by one, the group of supporters began hugging each other and finally it was announced after all 13 precincts had reported in that cityhood was a reality with a final 57% to 43% favorable vote. "I tell you the Peachtree Corners people realized that "no" is not a plan for the future," said Mason, referring to the group opposing cityhood whose campaign offered a strident message of "No City" as its campaign slogan. For the majority who had gathered at…

Lillian Webb, a long time mayor and former Gwinnett Commission Chair, offers her endorsement of the city of Peachtree Corners.
In a surprise announcement Lillian Webb, a well known public figure in Gwinnett County and former Mayor of Norcross, has given her blessings on the community of Peachtree Corners' efforts to organize as a city. This past August she had attended the community's first town hall meeting organized by the Peachtree Corners Yes campaign and spoke with Debbie Mason, one of the organizers, after the meeting expressing her hopes that community's referendum to organize as a city would pass. "Lillian came to the town hall meeting and afterwards said to me 'I sure hope this works for you,'" said Mason. "So I said to her, 'Could I get that in writing,'" recalled Mason. Webb promised, and true to her word, Webb delivered. At a fundraising meeting for …

Voters to decide in November on incorporation.
Wednesday Gov. Nathan Deal signed legislation authorizing the residents of Peachtree Corners to decide by vote in November on whether their community should incorporate and become Gwinnett County's 16th city. Fifteen people from the community who made their way to the Capitol to watch as the governor signed the bill. It was over in a matter of minutes but it had been a long journey for those involved. For Mike Mason, President of the United Peachtree Corners Civic Association (UPCCA), an organization that represents 33 homeowners associations in the community, it was the culmination of countless hours. But it's only the beginning for this community of some 35,000 residents. Now the real work begins to educate and inform the residents just…

The Bank of North Georgia may seek annexation instead of waiting to see if Peachtree Corners cityhood charter is voted through by residents.
The Bank of North Georgia, which is in the area Peachtree Corners would like to incorporate as a city, is looking into being annexed into the Norcross city limits. Branch Manager Rachel Cook said she has alerted her superiors to the current plans for Peachtree Corners for cityhood—and has presented them with the options so they can decide, “Do we want to be in Peachtree Corners or in Norcross?” The Peachtree Corners cityhood charter passed the Senate on March 31, 2011 and could soon land on the governor's desk to sign. The residents of Peachtree Corners would vote on the measure but local businesses would not cast a vote. Peachtree Corners seeks to provide zoning, code enforcement and trash pickup in the area but would not provide any …
