Mark Gary Sentencing in Bribery Case Postponed Again

Gary now scheduled to be sentenced May 16 for bribing former Gwinnett Commissioner Shirley Lasseter.

The sentencing for Gwinnett developer Mark Gary has been delayed again until May 16. Gary, who pleaded guilty Oct. 1 in U.S. District Court in Atlanta to a federal bribery charge, had been scheduled to be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Charles A. Pannell Jr. Feb. 28. Gary, a Duluth resident, had originally been scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 3, but Judge Pannell continued his sentencing hearing until late February to facilitate matters relating to Gary’s cooperation in an ongoing investigation of government corruption in Gwinnett County. Gary’s sentencing is now scheduled for 10 a.m. before Judge Pannell in Courtroom 2307 of the Richard B. Russell Federal Building in Atlanta. Duluth Developer Pleads Guilty to Bribing Shirley Lasseter

Sentencing hearing for Mark Gary is scheduled Jan. 3 in U.S. District Court in Atlanta.

Developer Mark Gary, 39, of Duluth, pleaded guilty Monday (Oct. 1) in federal district court in Atlanta to a charge of bribing then Gwinnett County Commissioner Shirley Lasseter in 2009 to secure approval of a proposed waste transfer station in which he held a personal stake. Gary's sentencing hearing is scheduled for Jan. 3 before U.S. District Judge Charles A. Pannell Jr. “Today’s guilty plea shows that paying off a public official is a losing bet,” said U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates in a press release issued by her office. “Gwinnett County’s approval of competing real estate developments is not a game in which votes are for sale to the highest bidder. We will continue to aggressively pursue business people who corrupt the system by…

Woman Tries Bribing Officer After Running Stop Sign

Inside the Police Reports: The Norcross woman acted erratically during the entire ordeal.

A Gwinnett County Police officer arrested a woman who allegedly ran a stop sign on Independence Day, but not before she refused to give up her license, attempted to bribe the officer with cash and even defecated on herself. Around 4:50 p.m. July 4, the officer saw the woman, 54 of unincorporated Norcross, roll through a stop sign at Oakbrook Parkway and Pirkle Road in her Honda Civic, according to the police report. The officer pulled over the vehicle and explained to her that she didn't come to a complete stop. She responded with, "How come you pull me over for that? I stopped." The officer told her that they could talk about it more once he saw her driver's license. She asked how she could be pulled over for running a "red light," to …

After pleading guilty to accepting bribes while serving as a Gwinnett County commissioner, Shirley Lasseter to be sentenced in U.S. District Court in Atlanta Aug. 6

Former Gwinnett County Commissioner Shirley Lasseter, 64, of Duluth faces a sentence of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 after pleading guilty in U.S. District Court in Atlanta Thursday morning to accepting $36,500 in bribes to support a proposed real estate development on Boggs Road. Lasseter’s son, John Fanning, 34, of Dacula and Carl “Skip” Cain, 65, of Flowery Branch pleaded guilty to participating in the bribery scheme and to drug trafficking. Lasseter sold [the influence of] her office and “betrayed the citizens who voted for her,” said U.S. Attorney Sally Yates during a press conference announcing the guilty pleas Thursday afternoon at the Richard Russell Building in downtown Atlanta. “Today’s guilty pleas are part of…
