Let it be known that your editor is a Japanaphile. I love everything about Japanese culture, from the kitschy little cell phone charms to the austerity of Zen culture. I spent long, quiet years perched in a little mountain town in rural Japan, after all. So you can imagine my delight when I found out that one of Atlanta’s most esteemed “underground” Japanese restaurants is right in Norcross, Sushi Yoko.  The restaurant is in unlikely territory, along the access road on Hwy 141, in what I thought may have been a late-night emporium. A Japanese habachi grill and sushi shop has defied the odds with its success.

Located inside The Forum shopping center, Aomi offers a unique Japanese Hibachi grill experience. Your table is right in front of a grill, with a personal chef who cooks your choice of meat with theatrical flair.  Doochil Park saw the location and the neighborhood and liked it right away. He was already busy running a restaurant while making plans for a second location at the time. However, he finalized his decision to close his first restaurant and devote all resources into making Aomi a success. Park’s vision for the restaurant was a mix of the East and West: something traditional but with modern décor. Wall separators made of bamboo offers guests privacy while keeping a Japanese flair.
