The popular camp offers kids a chance to learn to skate or improve skills - and get a little exercise in too.
Roller skating is once again becoming a popular activity – if you don’t believe it visit the Robert D. Fowler Family YMCA Roller Skating Camp in Peachtree Corners and watch the kids as they roll, race and sometimes fall, across the gym floor, in skates designed to be used on hard wood floors. This is a fun, comprehensive “learn to skate” program held in the Fowler Y gym. The participants learn to stop, turn, crossover, skate backwards and fall correctly in a fun, supervised environment. Due to its mounting popularity Skate Camp will be offered again the week of July 16. It is amazing to watch the children put on skates for the first time and see the transition as they gain confidence and discover they can make the eight wheels turn …

Tuesday, June 12, 2012
Summer is just days away now and kids are already playing in pools and families taking trips to the beach. With swimming safety in mind, the Simpsonwood Retreat (in cooperation with Fowler YMCA) is teaming up with Safe Kids Gwinnett as a new host of the World's Largest Swimming Lesson. People across the world, in over 45 states and 13 countries will take part in the record setting attempt. In 2011, the record was set with over 20,000 people diving in at the same time. The event is not only about fun, but also safety. According to Safe Kids Gwinnett, drowning is still the second leading cause of accidental, injury related deaths for children under the age of 14. If children ages one to four take formal swimming lessons, it reduces their …

The Peachtree Corners facility offers fun activities for kids, water fitness classes, recreational and masters swimming.
Do you remember when you first learned to swim? The thrill of taking off the floaties and feeling nothing but your arms and legs propel you through the cool water. The excitement of making it all the way across the pool, knowing this time, you could do it. That’s the feeling we hope to provide to kids this summer at the Y. “Swimming is important not only from the enjoyment it brings but also from health and safety perspectives," said Michael LaBarre, the YMCA's aquatics director. "Basic swimming skills and water safety practices save lives every day" The Y offers classes beginning at 6 months of age, all the way up to adults. Swimmers are divided into ability groups and are taught by certified swim instructors who emphasize safety, …

Tissue paper, pipe cleaners and a little imagination leads to some colorful creations at a recent YMCA outing.
A farmers market full of farmers selling fresh produce, lots of kids and a couple of Fowler YMCA staff yielded some fabulous paper flower creations in downtown Norcross this past Tuesday. Making paper flowers is a fun activity for kids of all ages, and the flowers will last a long, long time! Best of all, the kids are so proud of their creations saying, "Look, I made this myself!" All it takes is some colorful tissue paper, pipe cleaners and a healthy dose of imagination. Some of the children decided to wear their flowers in their hair, or on their wrists, through a shirt buttonhole, and others made them for their moms. Before long the Whistlestop Farmers Market was blooming with festive color! Craft making involves working with one’s …

When a group of 19 ladies decided to form a charity organization, the name nearly presented itself. As many of them are gardeners by avocation, including one Master Gardener, the Official Flower of the State of Georgia, the Cherokee Rose, noted for its beauty as well as its survival skills, seemed like a natural. Thus the Cherokee Rose Civic Association was born. Likewise, the first opportunity for the group presented itself, or rather, herself, in short order. A number of the Cherokee Rose team met at the Robert D. Fowler YMCA, where all were familiar with Jan Nance, a beloved staple of the Y for the past 12 years. After several years as a YMCA member, Jan ascended to water aerobics instructor in 2008. In August, she was diagnosed with …

Debbie Timm on behalf of the Corners to Crossing race committee presented a check on May 26 in the amount of $10,500 to the Fowler Family YMCA Partner With Youth campaign. The proceeds were collected from the The Corners to Crossing race, which began in 2008 as a way to bring together the two communities of Peachtree Corners and Norcross. This was the 4th annual race with more than 600 runners participating this year. "The annual Corners to Crossing race is a great fundraiser for the Y and great event for both communities," said Timm. This year’s race was run on Saturday, April 16, 2011. It is also a qualifying race for the Peachtree Road Race, which is held every July 4th.
