The Lady Wolves beat Laney 76-43 in the Class AA basketball girls final of the Georgia High School Association tournament in Macon.
The Wesleyan girls basketball dynasty continued Friday in the Georgia High School Association basketball finals at the Macon Centreplex. See also: The Lady Wolves ran away from Laney in the second half to beat the Lady Wildcats 76-43 in the Class AA championship game, their sixth consecutive state title. The championship ties a state GHSA record first set by Hart County, which won six in a row from 1989 to 1994. Wesleyan has now won 10 championships in 12 seasons under coach Jan Azar. Friday's win was the fourth blowout win out of five state-tournament games for the Lady Wolves, who also had wins of 56, 49 and 48 leading up to the final. Katie Frerking led the way with 28 points. Jennifer Miller, a volleyball player at Wesleyan, has committed to a scholarship with Texas Christian University, according to the A5 Volleyball Club. She is a four-year starter and team captain this year at Wesleyan, where she hold the single-season and career records for digs. Her accolades, according to a press release, includes being named to the Gwinnett County “Super Six,” first-team All-State and All-Area as a junior, and the NCSAA Super Regional Team for the Southeast. The Norcross High School boys and girls teams, the defending Class AAAAA champions, have first-round games this weekend.
UPDATED with Friday's scores Three Norcross-area teams won in the first round of the state girls basketball tournament. Norcross beat Archer 85-36 in Class AAAAA, Greater Atlanta Christian beat Jordan 68-40 in Class AA and Wesleyan beat Paideia 83-26. Defense of their state Class AAAAA basketball championships will begin from different positions of power this weekend for the Norcross High School boys and girls teams. The Norcross girls open the tournament tonight at home against Archer. Norcross is 23-5, the Region 7-AAAAA champion and a decided favorite over Archer (18-10), the fourth-place team from Region 8-AAAAA. Seven seniors from Norcross-area high schools have been named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship program. They are: Ryan Ward, Norcross High; Emory Brown, Andriy Kyrychenko and Jack Weyen, Greater Atlanta Christian School; and Nathan Grice, Elizabeth Lockett and Takim Williams, Wesleyan School. They are among the 16,000 students nationwide in the running for more than 8,000 National Merit Scholarships, totaling more than $34 million. The group will be whittled down to finalists in February. Scholarship winners will be announced in April.
