The Norcross studio gallery will debut "Raices" during Cinco de Mayo weekend.
Cinco de Mayo is quickly approaching, and most would say the right way to celebrate it is with a margarita in hand. This year, get more on the intellectual side of Mexican culture with art at Vargas & Harbin Studio Gallery in downtown Norcross. This weekend the gallery is debuting "Raices," a Latin American art exhibition featuring a number of different artists. Reinaldo Vargas, co-owner of the gallery, along with other metro Atlanta artists Carlos Solis, Dora Lopez, Stanley Bermudez, Pedro Fuentes, Jorge Arcos, Julio Mejia, Jose Pena and Alex Mendoza will collaboratively display their art, which will be "bursting with Latino vibrancy in color and meaning," according to a statement from the gallery. Last Wednesday, Vargas & Harbin Studio Gallery raised $1,500 for Hurricane Sandy victims during its going away party for Gwinnett County Artworks Director Sally Corbett. The funds, which will go to the American Red Cross, was collected during the party through raffle tickets for artwork and photography from local artists. Downtown restaurants and merchants supplied free food and gifts for the event. The businesses included 45 South Cafe, Mojitos, Dominicks, Iron Horse Tavern, Anna Balkan Gallery, Good Things, and The Shops of Antique Traditions. The idea for the fundraiser came from Corbett, who's returning to her hometown of New York to be closer to family. "We wish Sally Corbett farewell and safe travels back to her home in metro NYC," …

Come celebrate the arts in Norcross this Thursday with almost every shop in downtown.
Historic Downtown Norcross is having its first-ever monthly art walk this week with its Third Thursday Arts Party. Many different venues downtown will be participating in the event, which will start at 6 p.m. and run until 10 p.m. Vargas & Harbin Studio Gallery will be celebrating its first anniversary in Norcross with a wine reception and light appetizers, and next door, the photograph and mixed media studio Bella Vita Gallery is debuting its doors in Norcross. Other art galleries Kudzu Art Zone and The Nest also will be open, and Anna Balkan Designer Jewelry Gallery will be available to passersby, too, according to the A Place to Imagine website. Community members browsed the gallery filled with art from nine Cuban artists.
On Saturday in an opening wine reception, Vargas & Harbin Studio Gallery debuted its latest exhibition, "Come Together," featuring Cuban artists who have a outstanding history together. Nine prominent artists who once hailed from Havanna, Cuba, have reunited for the first time after thirty years to put together a collection celebrating their roots. The nine Cubans were students at the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Art, the country's oldest and most prestigious arts school. "It's amazing because after all those years, we notice how we change," said Reinaldo Vargas, co-owner of the gallery. Like to sip on some wine and have a bite of cheese at a local gallery--for a good cause? This Thursday, Dec. 8, the Gwinnett Village Community Alliance will hold a fundraiser at the Vargas & Harbin Studio Gallery downtown. Tickets can be purchased for $25 at the door or $20 through the Gwinnett Village Community Alliance website. Wine and cheese will be served in the gallery space at 27 S.
