Georgia State Troopers already have investigated more crashes during this New Year's holiday than last year, but fewer injuries and only three deaths have been reported – so far. During holiday period patrols, 262 people were arrested for driving under the influence. Troopers have investigated 315 accidents as of noon Dec. 31, which included 139 injuries and one death. During last year's entire 102-hour holiday, the Department of Public Safety investigated 296 accidents. But those accidents included 172 injuries and 7 deaths. Statewide last year, law enforcement agencies reported 1,929 accidents with 716 inuries and 13 deaths. Seventeen traffic deaths were reported in the 102-hour Christmas holiday travel period,which began Friday at 6 p.m. and ended at midnight, Christmas Day, according to the Georgia State Patrol. From Holly Springs-Hickory Flat Patch The 102-hour Thanksgiving holiday travel period ended at midnight Sunday with 19 traffic fatalities reported across the state. The Georgia State Patrol investigated 11 of the 19 fatal crashes that occurred between 6 p.m. Wednesday and midnight Sunday. The 19 traffic fatalities is one more than in 2011. State troopers investigated a total of 622 traffic crashes during the period that resulted in 263 injuries. Of the 11 traffic deaths investigated by troopers, alcohol is suspected as a contributing factor in 4 of the crashes, and 7 of the victims were not using seat belts. According to statistics released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Georgia Department of Transportation, 2010 marked the fifth consecutive year that fatalities on Georgia highways were down. As of Dec. 19, statistics indicate that the trend also continued in 2011 with Georgia registering 62 less fatalities than for the same period last year. Officials announced that traffic fatalities dropped substantially last year with a total of 1,244 highway deaths occurring in Georgia according to statistics finalized and published this month. Only six traffic fatalities reported on Georgia roads compared to 14 for the same period last year.
Updated 4:53 p.m. Despite wet roads on the last day of the Labor Day weekend, the Georgia Department of Public Safety reported a significant drop in traffic fatalities on Georgia Roads over the 78-hour travel weekend. For reporting purposes, the Labor Day travel weekend is from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Monday. According to the Georgia Department of Public Safety website, there were six fatalities reported statewide during this period. Georgia State Patrol reported 435 crashes with 225 injuries. The July 4th holiday travel period appeared to be more fatal this year than last, with 19 fatalities reported from law enforcement agencies throughout the state versus 11 in 2010. The Georgia State Patrol reported 313 crashes over the travel period, which ran from 6 p.m. on Friday to midnight on July 4. During that 78 period, the agency also reported 230 injuries. The Gainesville and Cumming area were especially fatal, with seven total traffic-related deaths reported.
