For more information on the project, check out the article Don't Fear the Peanut Shells in the Park. ---- After the playground area at Thrasher Park was closed last week to remove a dead tree, additional dates have been added to the city website for other maintenance work for Lillian Webb and Thrasher parks. The city of Norcross plans to remove a dead tree in the area.
Watch where your children are headed during the Whistle Stop Farmers Market, because the playground at Thrasher Park will be temporarily closed, according to the city of Norcross. The article states that the closure is due to the removal of a dead tree in the area. "We are sorry to disappoint the kiddies, but it's being done for safety reasons," says the article. The city expects the tree removal to be finished by Thursday morning, but urges locals to check back with the website for updates. For information about the playground or for the status of any Norcross park, contact the city Parks & Recreation Department at 678-421-2000.

Dahlonega Vegetable Farms set up its tent along Jones Street, the downtown shops offered strawberry desserts, and kids took part in face painting and bounce houses in Thrasher Park. All proceeds from the 5k and kids activities benefitted Kingdom Kids, a nonprofit organization that helps local children and families with challenges. For this year's Strawberry Stroll, Kingdom Kids is sponsoring a local 19-year-old girl who was diagnosed …

The city's Police and Citizens Together program is concentrating more on Norcross parks.
The city's Police and Citizens Together program is putting more focus on Norcross parks this spring and summer. PACT, which is initially a neighborhood watch effort, plans to crack down on vandalism in public areas by increasing police camera surveillance and providing more foot patrol by Norcross Police, according to a statement from the city. Most importantly, though, the program encourages citizens to report suspicious, illegal or unsafe activity, including swimming in or jumping into fountains. "Heightening awareness and encouraging citizens to report anything suspicious will reinforce the efforts of our officers," said Norcross Police Chief Warren Summers in the press release. "We have been successful using this partnership approach …

We’ve all heard the expression, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” For a group of Norcross kids, the words weren’t so much sage advice as they were instructions.

The story begins with Sarah Kim and her husband, known by most around Norcross merely as “Pastor” Kim. They came to Norcross about ten years ago, started a church and began to minister to the faithful from Korea. But recently “Pastor” Kim, now in his 60s, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer – and it’s terminal. Sarah cuts hair for a living. Now, she is the family breadwinner –which means she works most of the time, leaving little time to take care of her husband, much less simply be with him in his final days. Most days he remains alone at home while Sarah works. That’s where the group of Norcross kids entered the picture. “Sarah and her husband mean a lot to us,” says Noel Kyle. “We’ve known them for about nine years. So, naturally…

The Journey tribute band Departure takes the stage Friday night as part of the summer concert series.
Departure is going to rock out Thrasher Park this Friday, Aug. 5, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The concert is free and to-go picnics are available from the eateries downtown. Bass player, Doug Ballard, said you can expect a high-energy, high-quality show. “(Lead singer) Brian Williams from a vocal standpoint is as close to Steve Perry and that range and quality sound as I think you can find in a Journey tribute band,” he said. Williams can even move like the Journey front man. He studied Perry’s movements by watching YouTube videos and a Journey DVD titled, “Live at Houston.” He mimicked and memorized Perry’s hand gestures, motions and general swagger for the first couple of years the band was together. “He put a lot of time and energy into it…
