The city now owns the 20.6 acres of undeveloped land on Peachtree Parkway.
Editor's note: Bill Johnson is the Public Information Officer for the City of Peachtree Corners. Peachtree Corners city officials took an important step toward fulfilling their promise to protect the quality of life and safeguard property values in the city Monday by closing on the purchase of a 20.6 acre tract of land across from The Forum on Peachtree Parkway. City officials voted unanimously earlier this year to purchase what has become known as the Robert Property. A developer had planned to build a 250-acre apartment complex on the site that was out of character with the surrounding area. "Today's purchase represents a win-win situation for the city," Mason said. "The city has stopped the development of an apartment complex that …

Bob Cheeley, who sits on the board of directors of Piedmont Bank in Peachtree Corners, had planned to develop the acreage across from The Forum.
Just when it looked as though it was a matter of time before the Peachtree Corners community would have a mixed-use development on the undeveloped land across from The Forum, the developer pulled out. Bob Cheeley, with Piedmont Bank, had stepped in ahead of the city with a contract to buy the land. He explains why he had a change of heart just days before the anticipated April 15th closing date. "It was a decision I made over the weekend," said Cheeley, who is also developing a 4.5 acre tract adjacent to Piedmont Bank. "I had a number of meetings with investors leading up to the weekend who really wanted to do something." But without the property rezoned, he said he was not able to get the commitments he needed for the estimated $160 …

In a surprise turn of events, the Peachtree Corners mayor announced Tuesday night that the city would follow through on its back-up contract to purchase the 20.6 acres of undeveloped property on S.R. 141.
Tuesday night's City Council meeting began with proclamations and presentations - but finished with some surprising news - the city of Peachtree Corners is about to become a landowner. Announced just a few months ago as the new developer of the "Roberts property," Bob Cheeley, has decided he will not follow through with the plans to purchase and develop the 20.6 acre tract of land across from The Forum. "We were notified yesterday that Cheeley wasn't going to buy the property," said Mayor Mike Mason. The city had placed a back-up contract on the land in the event the original contract was not executed so will follow through and purchase the land. Mason said the contract requires that the city close within 25 days, but there is a provision …

In a sudden turn of events, the Peachtree Corners City Council said Wednesday night that a private developer had put a contract on the 20.6-acre tract of land across from The Forum.
In a surprise announcement at the Special Called City Council meeting Wednesday (Feb. 27) night, Peachtree Corners Mayor Mike Mason said that a new buyer had stepped in and put a contract on the tract of land across from the Forum. Peachtree Corners city leaders had decided earlier to purchase the 20.6-acre tract known as the Roberts Property to keep the property from being developed into a 250+ apartment complex. But with a contract from a private buyer now in place, that will no longer be necessary. The new developer's plans for the site is for a mixed-use development and will be in keeping with the architecture of The Forum across the street, said Mason. "We were surprised and pleased a market alternative presented itself," Mason said…

Leaders said they would seek to enter into a contract to purchase 20+ undeveloped acres.
There was only one item on the agenda for Monday night's Peachtree Corners City Council meeting - but it was a big one. The City of Peachtree Corners will pursue the purchase the 20+ undeveloped acres across from The Forum on S.R. 141. Becoming land owners was not the intention when the city was formed said Mayor Mike Mason in his opening remarks. But to avoid having the property developed into 250+ apartments, it ended up to be the city's only option. "We didn't know until October 2012 that Charlie Roberts (the current property owner at the time) had plans to sell it," said Mason. The new owner was Lennar, a Miami, Fla.-based apartment developer. "It was a big surprise to us," he added. Mason said the city looked for other options but …

A large apartment complex is slated to be built on the undeveloped acreage on Peachtree Parkway across from the popular Peachtree Corners open-air shopping center.
It's long been the dream of many in Peachtree Corners that the 20+ acres across from The Forum would be developed into a multi-use area that all could enjoy. That dream is about to end. Charlie Roberts, the owner of the coveted land, and the last undeveloped acreage in the city, has announced he will soon sell the property to Lennar, a Miami, Florida-based company to be developed into a high-end multi-family complex of some 250 or so apartments. Despite a decade-old fight to keep apartments from being built by community activists including the United Peachtree Corners Civic Association (UPCCA), a large apartment complex is planned for the property. Construction could start as early as May, 2013. "It's not the best use of the land," agreed …

Founder and owner of the Van Michael Concept Salon in the Forum finishes strong, earning him bragging rights for Denver race.
Barely a week has passed since he took on the toughest single-day mountain bike race in the world. But area hair salon owner and Woodstock resident Van Council was back at it again this past Saturday in the north Georgia mountains racing the Fools Gold 50 miler out of Dahlonega's Montaluce Winery. Council, 54, founder and owner of the Van Michael Concept Salons in The Forum in Norcross, Miami, and Tokyo, finished the Leadville Trail 100 mountain bike race on August 13 with a fast enough time to earn him a coveted "Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race" belt buckle and bragging rights that come with the territory. "That's what it's all about, that belt buckle," Council said last week from his Buckhead salon. "And man it was a lot of people …
