What my kids have taught me about gratitude.
It's that time of year again where I reflect on all the things that I am grateful for. Being a parent has helped me to not take things for granted and to appreciate many simple moments in life. Here is a list of the top 10 things that I've learned to be thankful for since I became a mother. 1. The value of a good night's sleep. Seriously, I had never known true exhaustion until I became a parent. Now that my children sleep soundly through the night, I thank my lucky stars for 8 hours of uninterrupted bliss. Without it, I turn into a crazy person. 2. A closed bathroom door. It's rare that I spend time powdering my nose without a child following me in there. Oh, but those moments that I do escape are so beautiful, even if both of my …

Of all the Thanksgiving traditions, the one with the most staying power came before the food.
My family has a clearly defined Thanksgiving menu that, as far as I can tell, has not been riffed on or expanded for years. No, decades. This feast consists of the following required elements: The green bean casserole with French onion soup mix and fried Durkee onion topping. Somebody’s Grandma’s marshmallow-and-cranberry salad. Frozen mixed veggies slathered with Velveeta and topped with crushed Ritz (an easy one to pass off on a newcomer). And the turkey and dressing, of course. But before we eat this monstrous ode to Americana, my mom insists that we do something slightly unorthodox. She wants us to go around the table and tell the whole, extended family what we are thankful for that year. (The tradition has died down as our family …

In collaboration with the United Way, the pro basketball team’s staff served meals to an expected 300 residents.
Last night at Meadowcreek High School, the Atlanta Hawks General Manager Rick Sund was manning the turkey station, while the CFO has the important job of “dessert specialist.” With Head Coach Larry Drew dishing up stuffing and others on the staff piling on the casseroles and veggies, the meal for 300 was complete. “This is one of my favorite events of the year,” said Atlanta Hawks and Phillips Area President Bob Williams in between serving. “It is so nice to see that smile on the kids’ faces.
