Gwinnett Online Campus Scores Well in State Writing Test

The students at the school in Norcross are among the highest performers. The writing test is given annually to eighth-grade students, and used to determine whether students move to the next grade.

Gwinnett County middle school students scored well in the recent state writing test, with Norcross schools scoring among the highest. More than 12,600 eighth-grade students took the test in January 2013, and Gwinnett County Public Schools released overall results on March 25. The district’s average passing rate (met or exceeds standard) remains high and increased one percentage point this year, from 93 percent in 2012 to 94 percent now, according to officials. Statewide, 82 percent met or exceeded the standard. The Gwinnett Online Campus was among the highest performing schools in the district, with 97 percent of students meeting or exceeding standards. It also had the fewest percentage of students to score in the "does not meet" category…

Rotary Club Recognizes Summerour 7th Grader

Gabriela Pantoja of Summerour Middle was named the Peachtree Corners Rotary Club's Student of the Month.

The Peachtree Corners Rotary Club recognizes a student who has done something outstanding whether academically, athletically or through community service. Recently, seventh-grader Gabriela Pantoja of Summerour Middle School was named the club's Student of the Month. The Peachtree Corners Rotary Club recognizes a student who has done something outstanding whether academically, athletically or through community service. Recently, eighth grader David Prefontaine of Summerour Middle was named the club's Student of the month. Recently Summerour Middle School student Melinda Montes, a sixth grader, was recognized as the club's Student of the Month. GCPS Says Goodbye to 435 Retiring Teachers, Staff

Norcross schools lose 23 veteran educators and support staff who retired at the end of the 2011-2012 school year.

Gwinnett County Public Schools thanked 435 classroom teachers, office staff, administrators, counselors and media specialists who retired after the 2011-2012 school year, according to a press release. Collectively the group of Gwinnett County Public School retirees have spent 11,233 years of their lives in education and 180 have 30 years of service, 15 have invested 40 or years and one retiree has 50 years in education, according to a release from Gwinnett County Public Schools. "I would like to personally thank each of our retiring employees for their service to Gwinnett County Public Schools, to our community, and most importantly to our students," said CEO and Superintendent J. Video: Summerour Hosts International Week

The middle schoolers celebrated cultures from all around the world.

Students, parents, faculty and community members came out to Summerour Middle's third annual International Night, a celebration filled with the diversity present at the school. "Since we're such a multicultural school, we wanted to have an opportunity for our students to be able to display their cultures," said Assistant Principal Michelle Ransom. "We also wanted them to have the opportunity to express, celebrate and help us coordinate this program." The event, which was held Wednesday, May 9, was part of the Summerour's International Week. Classes decorated their doors for contests, assembled an artifacts display in the front of the school and had guest speakers. 'Girls on the Run' Prepare for 5K Race

Combining physical fitness with a healthy body image, this program is making a difference in the lives of Gwinnett's youngest girls.

The media is full of messages to girls and women about their image, their role and their value. Most recently, Ashley Judd received the brunt of the entertainment industry's vitriol as they discussed her “puffy” appearance, followed by all sorts of speculation. She took to the pen and composed a sharp, powerful essay asserting not only her own personal dignity and strength, but that of all other women bombarded by society's unrealistic expectations (perpetuated by the media).  Some organizations, like Dove's Campaign for Real Beauty, have worked to develop a counter-culture within the media, while others have developed programs to reach girls at a young age with a positive message.  Girls on the Run is one of those.  Founded in North …

Update: Missing Girl Located

Melanie Yazmin Lopez, 12, has been missing since 4:30 p.m. March 14.

Update: 10:40 p.m. Capt. Brian Harr said in a press release that the missing child, Melanie Yazmin Lopez, was located and is now with her family. --- The Norcross Police Department is looking for a missing 12-year-old girl who did not get on her bus after school. According to a press release from Capt. Brian Harr, Melanie Yazmin Lopez, a student at Summerour Middle School, was last seen at the school around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday March 14. She could have been seen walking around Mitchell Road or Buford Highway after she missed the bus, added Harr.  She is 5 feet tall and 115 pounds, and was last seen wearing jeans, a navy-blue polo shirt, black shoes and a lime-green backpack. Summerour Celebrates Walk to School Day

Summerour Middle School students walked to school Wednesday as part of a statewide initiative that encourages children to lead healthier lifestyles by walking or biking to school.

About 75 students from Summerour Middle School deliberately missed the school bus on Wednesday. They walked to school instead. The kids, escorted by parents and other adult volunteers, were participating in the statewide Georgia Walk to School Day – held by the Safe Routes to School program, an initiative that encourages children to lead healthier lifestyles by walking or biking to school. It was the third year the event was held across the state. Gwinnett Board of Education Chairwoman Louise Radloff arrived early and walked with students. “It is a great day, and I am so proud of you for walking to school. 102 Teams Competing in Readers Rally

Participating Norcross Cluster schools include Norcross High School, Summerour Middle School, and Stripling, Beaver Ridge and Norcross elementary schools.

The seventh annual Gwinnett Readers Rally continues to nurture love of books among local students. A large contingent of students, parents, school administrators, teachers and community members are expected to attend this year’s rally Saturday, March 3. More than 100 school teams will participate in the literary quiz-bowl competition for student readers in grades 4 through 12. Norcross Cluster schools participating include Norcross High School, Summerour Middle School, and Stripling, Beaver Ridge and Norcross elementary schools. Readers will compete in 10-student teams.
