Rotary Club Recognizes Stripling Student

Angeline Guerra of Stripling Elementary was named the Peachtree Corners Rotary Club's Student of the Month.

The Peachtree Corners Rotary Club recognizes a student who has done something outstanding whether academically, athletically or through community service. Recently, Angeline Guerra of Stripling Elementary was named the club's Student of the Month. Guerra received the following proclamation from the school: Our Rotary Student of the Month is Angeline Guerra. Angeline is a wonderful student and an enthusiastic learner. She shows initiative, and is always looking for ways to be involved in the classroom. She enjoys helping around the classroom, whether it is straightening a messy area or collecting papers from her classmates. Recently, third grader Naimah Williams of Stripling Elementary School was named the club's Student of the Month. Williams received the following proclamation from the school: Naimah is a wonderful student! She comes to class prepared everyday and always presents her best work. Naimah is helpful to the teacher and her fellow classmates. She is always willing to work with others and support their learning as well. Former Stripling Elementary Teacher Passes Away

Charon Cayne Chase, 54, died at her Berkeley Lake home Monday, Dec. 10.

Obituary provided by Crowell Brothers Funeral Home of Peachtree Corners. Charon Caye Chase of Berkeley Lake, Georgia, passed away on December 10th at home at the age of 54. Born on July 30, 1958 in Livonia, Michigan to Marjorie and Ellsworth Chase, Charon earned a Bachelor's of Business Administration from Michigan State University in 1980 and went on to a career with Abbott Laboratories/Hospira before retiring at 50 years of age to start a new career in teaching. Charon attended Mercer University and received a Master's in Teaching in Spring 2011. After graduating, Charon taught 2nd grade at Stripling Elementary School, Norcross, Georgia. Charon was an avid organic gardener, loved the outdoors, spending time with family and friends and …

Become a Reading Mentor at Stripling Elementary

The Norcross school is looking for volunteers for its Power Lunch program, where adults read books to students during lunchtime.

Do you love to read to kids? Stripling Elementary is looking for adults to become reading mentors for its Power Lunch program, geared by Everybody Wins! Atlanta. Held at eight different schools in the metro Atlanta area, the program aims to help students with reading. Volunteers will meet with the students once or twice a week, either on Tuesday or Thursday, and read aloud from books provided by the program. "For the past 15 years, Everybody Wins! Atlanta has been devoted to improving the reading skills of students who are reading below grade level," according to a flyer of the program. "The Power Lunch program is easy, rewarding, and has improved the academic performance of students who are struggling in their reading skills." This year …

Stripling Earns Top Honors as Green & Healthy School

Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful and Gwinnett County Public Schools awarded the elementary school with the honors.

Stripling Elementary School has earned the top county honors as a 2012 Green & Healthy School. As a joint venture from Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful and Gwinnett County Public Schools, the Green & Healthy School Program provides educational tool kits for schools to be more environmentally involved. The program helps with "planning, executing and assessing the effectiveness of environmental lessons, activities, standards and school programs," according to a press release from the city of Norcross. Students learn about real-world topics such as water pollution, waste reduction and recycling. "Kids are engaged in learning practical things that they can relate to in the real world, and they learn to be accountable for creating and maintaining a …

GCPS Says Goodbye to 435 Retiring Teachers, Staff

Norcross schools lose 23 veteran educators and support staff who retired at the end of the 2011-2012 school year.

Gwinnett County Public Schools thanked 435 classroom teachers, office staff, administrators, counselors and media specialists who retired after the 2011-2012 school year, according to a press release. Collectively the group of Gwinnett County Public School retirees have spent 11,233 years of their lives in education and 180 have 30 years of service, 15 have invested 40 or years and one retiree has 50 years in education, according to a release from Gwinnett County Public Schools. "I would like to personally thank each of our retiring employees for their service to Gwinnett County Public Schools, to our community, and most importantly to our students," said CEO and Superintendent J. 'Girls on the Run' Prepare for 5K Race

Combining physical fitness with a healthy body image, this program is making a difference in the lives of Gwinnett's youngest girls.

The media is full of messages to girls and women about their image, their role and their value. Most recently, Ashley Judd received the brunt of the entertainment industry's vitriol as they discussed her “puffy” appearance, followed by all sorts of speculation. She took to the pen and composed a sharp, powerful essay asserting not only her own personal dignity and strength, but that of all other women bombarded by society's unrealistic expectations (perpetuated by the media).  Some organizations, like Dove's Campaign for Real Beauty, have worked to develop a counter-culture within the media, while others have developed programs to reach girls at a young age with a positive message.  Girls on the Run is one of those.  Founded in North …

102 Teams Competing in Readers Rally

Participating Norcross Cluster schools include Norcross High School, Summerour Middle School, and Stripling, Beaver Ridge and Norcross elementary schools.

The seventh annual Gwinnett Readers Rally continues to nurture love of books among local students. A large contingent of students, parents, school administrators, teachers and community members are expected to attend this year’s rally Saturday, March 3. More than 100 school teams will participate in the literary quiz-bowl competition for student readers in grades 4 through 12. Norcross Cluster schools participating include Norcross High School, Summerour Middle School, and Stripling, Beaver Ridge and Norcross elementary schools. Readers will compete in 10-student teams. See Ted Run for School Equipment

An employee of a Peachtree Corners business is jogging to and from work everyday to help raise funds for new playground equipment at Stripling Elementary.

Ted Pappas is running—figuratively and literally—a not-so-ordinary fundraiser for Stripling Elementary School. He's jogging to and from work, every single day. Help Ted Run! is a fundraiser for Stripling's Project Playground, an initiative to purchase new playground and P.E. equipment for the elementary school. Ted Pappas, the vice president of professional services at Corus360 in Peachtree Corners, started the project Feb. 1.
