AAAAAA Championship: Lovejoy Leads Norcross 7-0 at Half

Undefeated Norcross is taking on Lovejoy High in the Georgia Dome.

Norcross High trailed Lovejoy High 7-0 at halftime in the Class AAAAAA state football championship Saturday night. Before the game, Maxwell Ratings had projected Norcross would win the title by 9 points. Patch will have continue to update from the game. Are you watching? Share your comments below.

Norcross Elementary Chess Team Heads to State Championship

The team earned fourth place at regionals earlier this month, qualifying them for the state championships in March.

The Norcross Elementary chess team earned fourth place at the Eastern Metro Regional Chess Tournament earlier this month, qualifying them for the state championships in March. A total of 21 teams competed Feb. 4 at the DeKalb and Gwinnett county regional tournament. Only the top five teams qualify for an automatic invitation to state. In addition going to the state championships, Norcross Elementary also finished first among the 10 competing public schools in Gwinnett, earning them the Gwinnett County Champion title in the K-5 division. "To perform as well as they did at the regionals was incredible," said Ken Almon, Norcross Elementary's chess coach who also teaches fifth grade. GAC Girls Volleyball Heads to State

The game will be broadcast on GHSA.tv.

The state volleyball tournament has been narrowed down to two teams in Class AA/A, with GAC's girls going head-to-head with Eagles Landing Christian at 11 a.m. Saturday morning at Marietta High School. If you can't make it out, you can check out the game carried live on GHSA.tv. The Lady Spartans beat rival Holy Innocents' at Athens Academy in the Final Four on Wednesday to advance to the final state game.

Lady Spartans Fall To Blessed Trinity In Double Overtime

The GAC Girls soccer team lost in double overtime to the Titans of Blessed Trinity in the GHSA Class AA Girls Soccer State Finals.

Blessed Trinity freshman Delaney Fechalos converted a penalty kick with 2:37 left in the second overtime to give the Titans a 1-0 win over Greater Atlanta Christian and to take the Class AA State Championship. Both teams played an extremely hard-fought match throughout regulation and both teams had chances to score.  However, neither team was able to break the scoreless tie in regulation, or in the first 5 minute overtime period. The Lady Spartans asserted their aggressiveness on offense in the later stages of regulation, and very nearly got a goal.  With a little over 17 minutes left in regulation,  sophomore forward Rachel Garcia drilled a shot that hit the crossbar and almost went into the net.  Earlier in the second half, senior …

GAC Outlasts Scrappy North Oconee In Soccer Semifinals

GAC beats North Oconee 2-0 and moves on to the Class AA state soccer finals.

The Spartans of GAC and the Titans of North Oconee fought it out for the right to go to the State Championship, but thanks to goals from Paul Ille and Stewart Abrahart, GAC prevailed 2-0 and will host Westminster in the Class AA State Championship match on Saturday.         "We are on our way to the finals.  It was a very good performance by North Oconee.  It was very difficult to break them down.  We kept knocking at the door and coudln't get it, but we finally got the break," GAC Head Coach Thom Jacquet said. "I thought our defensive did a great job.  It kept them out of many good scoring opportunities," he added.         Even though the first half was scoreless, the Spartans had several chances.  The brilliant play of North Oconee …

Double Victory: Norcross Girls Win State Championship

Friday, March 11, 2011 will go down as a great day in the history of Norcross High School Athletics.  Norcross has won state titles in both girls and boys basketball, but never in the same year.  Until last night.         After the second quarter of the girls game, the Lady Blue Devils left no doubt they were going to take home the hardware Friday night.  Sophomore guard Diamond DeShields scored 26 points to lead Norcross to back-to-back State Championships as they rolled over McEachern 61-36.  At the end of the first quarter, it looked like the Lady Indians were going to put up a serious challenge for the trophy, with a tied score of 9-9.      However, the Lady Blue Devils made their critical 13-0 run in the second quarter, a run that …
