Are You Concerned About the Safety at Norcross Schools?

On Jan. 31, a teen shooter brought a gun to Atlanta's Price Middle School and shot a student. Parents there are enraged. Are you concerned about the safety at Norcross and Gwinnett schools?

Last week's shooting at an Atlanta middle school certainly upset parents in that school district, but it also may have piqued your concern. In that incident, a 14-year-old boy was sent to the hospital after a bullet grazed his neck. He was released later that day.  And, a 15-year-old was arrested and charged in what police are calling a "gang-related" shooting, according to media reports. Since then, angry parents have questioned the operation of metal detectors and overall security at the school. At a recent school board meeting, APS Director of Security Marquenta Sands said that they are looking at "advanced technology" to keep children safe, according to an AJC report. She offered few specifics, though, and gave little explanation as to…

I have no concerns about safety at Norcross Elementary School. In the rare event of a false alarm on campus, I have been very impressed by the super-quick response of the "just down the block" Norcross Police Department and Gwinnett Fire Department.   more ›

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration says LRG Framing Inc. has six penalties totaling $66,660.

A Norcross-based construction company is being cited on six safety violations at a residential work site in Cumming, according to a press release from the Department of Labor. The DOL's Occupational Safety and Health administration had cited LRG Framing Inc., located at 5731 Glenn Hollow Court, for $66,660 worth of penalties, which are detailed in the following: The company has been cited three times since 2006 for allowing its employees to work without protection from falling, the release says. One of these citations included a connection with a site fatality in East Point in 2007, where the employer was required to take a OSHA safety training course. “Falls are the leading cause of death for workers in residential construction," said …

Halloween Safety Tips for Your Trick-or-Treaters

To keep kiddos safe, Norcross Police will be manning some crosswalks downtown. Also, the Better Business Bureau provides some Halloween safety tips for trick-or-treating.

The night of fright (and copious amounts of sugar) has arrived. Norcross Police will be manning three crosswalks on N. Peachtree Street in Historic Norcross to keep trick-or-treaters safe. Also, no parking or stopping will be allowed from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today on the street.  The Better Business Bureau has issued safety instructions for Halloween Trick-or-Treating. Whether it’s the candy the little ghosts or goblins eat, the costumes they wear or road safety while they are out trick-or-treating, the BBB asks that parents and children take heed of the following advice. Elizabeth Smart Brings Empowerment Message to GAC

The young woman, who was held captive for nine months in Utah, tells kids they can protect themselves from predators.

When a man entered Elizabeth Smart’s bedroom and held a knife to her throat, she said she thought she had two options: scream and put her entire family in danger or go with the man. “Had I been educated, I would’ve known there are more than two options,” she said in front of a sold-out crowd at Greater Atlanta Christian Schools in Norcross this morning. She was speaking there to advocate child empowerment, specifically for the program radKIDS, which teaches children to escape from people who are doing bad things to them—through force, if necessary. The poised and petite now-college senior said if she would’ve known that she could have acted against the man, she would have saved herself from nine months of sexual abuse and terror. “I just …

In Wake of Tragedy, Patrol Stresses Safety on Roadway

The tragic death of Norcross High student puts focus on safe driving.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol report, Darrian George was driving south on State Road 93 in Marion County around 3 in the morning when he drifted across the lanes and into a grassy median. The Norcross High School student did what many drivers do as a reaction: He braked and tried to get back onto the road, taking what patrol officers called “evasive action.” It is that action that so often ends with tragedy, according to Lieutenant Patrick V. Riordan, who works in the office of the Florida Highway Patrol in the area. The front tires meet resistance with the roadway. The back tires have the least resistance so the driver loses of control, often rolling the car on top of itself, says Riordan. Anything in the vehicle flies at the …

Norcross Police Conduct Crosswalk Safety Detail

Plain-clothes officers walked across downtown crosswalks, trying to catch violators in vehicles.

Updated 2:06 p.m.  Did you see someone crossing the street downtown yesterday around between 11 a.m. and noon? He or she could have been an undercover Norcross Police officer.  The Norcross PD conducted a detail with an eye on pedestrian safety in the city, with two officers in street clothes at downtown crosswalks and six other uniformed officers standing back a distance, ready to flag down crosswalk violators in vehicles.  "We want to help the public understand," said Cpt. Brian Harr. "This is about compliance and education." Harr said he wants to dispel any ideas that Norcross isn't safe to be a pedestrian--and make sure people know that the police take this stuff seriously.  The opertation comes on the heels of a pedestrian being …

This Fourth of July, Be Safe-and Legal-with Fireworks

Though some fireworks were legalized in 2005, ariel fireworks are still illegal for the public.

On Fourth of July weekend, chances are you will be around fireworks.  In May of 2005, the Governor of Georgia signed Senate Bill 133 into law, allowing the sale and use of certain fireworks in the state. These fireworks are referred to as “sparklers” and generally include fountains, sparklers, smoke balls, snakes, ground spinners, pinwheels, and most novelty fireworks that stay on the ground.  Ariel fireworks are still considered illegal in the state of Georgia.  The Gwinnett County Police Department offers the following tips for fireworks safety:  • Always read the directions carefully in a brightly lit setting and follow them. Inspect fireworks for any defects. • Never give fireworks to children. • Always keep a bucket of water, a garden…
