Retail Bus Tour Lands in Norcross

The tour brought 180 people to bring development and redevelopment to the city Thursday.

Norcross Mayor Bucky Johnson and the city staff met with 180 people on the Retail Bus Tour last Thursday to show them what Norcross has to offer. Retailers, landowners, business owners, brokers and investors were invited to the Norcross Cultural Arts and Community Center to have a drink and snack, listen to the mayor give a five-minute rundown of Norcross and explain the different corporations in the city, and envision the development possibilities for new businesses and the like in the area. The purpose of the event was to attract developers and investors to the city of Norcross, particularly Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Buford Highway. "This is the best event I have seen in the last two years, in this genre," said Rusty Warner, Norcross' …

Hotel Annexes Into Norcross, Brings $8 Million Investment

A parcel is now in the city limits, and redevelopment of a Holiday Inn is expected to begin soon.

The City Council accepted the request of a landowner at Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and Holcomb Bridge Road to come into the city limits, also clearing the way for Norcross Hospitality LLC to redevelop the space into a Holiday Inn, which they said would be roughly an $8 million investment. The parcel at 6050 Peachtree Industrial Blvd. currently houses the Garden Plaza hotel and a non-functioning restaurant. It appears that the parcel would have become part of the proposed City of Peachtree Corners if the cityhood measure is passed by citizen vote on Nov. 8. Norcross sent materials inviting businesses in the area to become a part the city in lieu of Peachtree Corners. This annexation was done under the “100 percent” method, which calls …

New Walmart Planned on Jimmy Carter

Officials hope the development will breathe new life into a troubled shopping center.

A 150,000 square foot Walmart is coming in at the Green’s Corner shopping center on Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Rockbridge Road in the Norcross area. The development will lead to the closing of two nightclubs, which officials say have been problematic.  “From a redevelopment standpoint, this is the biggest thing I’ve seen in a long time,” said Chuck Warbington, Executive Director of the Gwinnett Village CID, which helped Walmart locate the property, where a K-mart was built in 1983. The K-mart has since closed, and the shopping center has been relatively desolate for years.  Warbington said that Walmart first looked into a new store in the area three or four years back, but the economy put their search on hold. The hunt for a suitable …

Mixed-Use Plan Presented for Norcross Industrial Site

The site of a fiber optic plant could be a live-work-play center.

At yesterday’s Gwinnett Village CID board meeting, an early concept plan was unveiled for a $500 million to $1 billion potential development in Norcross at the sight of the OFS fiber optics manufacturing facility. The plans include “mixed-use” buildings with office, retail and residential under one roof as well as a towering hotel, all nestled around a central green space. The sprawling OFS campus is off I-85, south of Jimmy Carter Boulevard at 6305 Crescent Avenue.  “This area is 175 acres in the heart of the CID. (The development) has the ability to transform the area,” said consultant Scott Ball from the Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company, who put together the plans after OFS approached the CID. It calls for 1.3 million square feet of office…

City's Economic Opportunity Zone Expanded

The new, expanded zone, which can provide businesses with tax credits for up to $3500 for each new job created, will now include the North Belt Business Park.

The city’s economic opportunity zone just got a little bigger. On Wednesday, officials announced that the Georgia Department of Community Affairs has approved Norcross’ application for expansion of the city’s Opportunity Zone to include the North Belt Business Park located at Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Best Friend Road. This means qualifying businesses located in the zone now qualify for a maximum state tax of $3500 for each new job created. “Opportunity Zones are one of the most powerful tools available for the City of Norcross’ redevelopment goals,” said Norcross Mayor Bucky Johnson in a released statement. “With this tax credit, the economic benefits gained by the partnership between the CID and Norcross, the high level of security …
