It's a new year and with it comes a new waste pickup schedule. The city of Norcross has posted the 2013 calendar for its three-day pickup schedule on garbage, yard waste and recycling. The Tuesday-through-Thursday arrangement can be found in the attached PDF above, with full instructions on when and how to put out recycling carts and yard disposal. There will be no trash or recycling pickup for county residents on New Year's Day, Tuesday, Jan. 1. Regularly scheduled Tuesday trash and recycling pickups for county residents will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 2. Here's what's happening in Norcross this weekend.
Kick off the weekend by helping our public schools. The Norcross Cluster Schools Partnership (NCSP) is holding its annual fundraiser on Friday to support area public school teachers, students and educational activities. Event details are online at www.norcrosscsp.org. Or if you want to be entertained, see Of Mice and Men at the Lionheart Theatre Friday though Sunday. On Saturday night, there is a fundraiser for Aimee Copeland, the 24-year-old Snellville resident who lost her limbs from flesh-eating bacteria after a zip-line accident. Called Art for Aimee: Our Community Can Help, artist Vicki Johnson is donating a portion of her sales to help Copeland with her medical expenses. Copeland herself is expected to be there. Get ready to shred, dump and donate those unwanted materials in your home: Neighborhood Clean-up and Recycling Day is hitting Norcross this Saturday, April 7. Recycling day, which occurs twice a year, will start as early as 8 a.m. at various locations around town with volunteers in tow. This time around the event includes a whole laundry list of items, so there's no excuse why you shouldn't get rid of junk lying around the house. Whether you take down your tree as soon as the presents are ripped open or let the season linger well into January—you can help make Gwinnett and the City of Norcross beautiful by recycling your tree. The City of Norcross has a year-round mulching program—and Christmas trees can be recycled as a part of the effort, even though regular trees cannot be because of their size. Sustainable Norcross got the mulching program going as a part of the Green Communities certification process. Check your yard debris pick up schedule to see when to drag your tree out to the curb. Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful is also asking you to donate your old trees to their annual "Bring One for the Chipper" tree recycling campaign. The trees will be turned into mulch …
