The Gwinnett County Animal Shelter has issued a rabies alert after rabid raccoons were found in Suwanee and Buford.
A raccoon found Nov. 22 on the 4300 block of Grey Park Drive in Buford has been tested positive for rabies. A second raccoon found the same day on the 1100 block of Swan Mill Court in Suwanee also tested positive for rabies. Officials advise that anyone who has been bitten or scratched by any stray animals or who may have handled the raccoon should call the Gwinnett County Animal Welfare and Enforcement Bite Office at 770-339-3200 ext. 5576. Today, Gwinnett County Animal Welfare and Enforcement issued a Rabies Alert based upon a cat which tested positive in the state's laboratory. The cat was found on 149 Melody Lane in Lawrenceville on October 25, 2011. They suggest that if you or anyone you know has been bitten or scratched by any stray animal, or if you know of anyone handling this animal please call the Gwinnett County Animal Welfare and Enforcement Office at 770.339.3200 ext. 5576. Gwinnett County has issued rabies alerts after a grey fox and cat both tested positive for rabies, according to the Animal Welfare and Enforcement website. The fox was found on East Crogan Street in Lawrenceville on May 15, and the cat on Cindy Court in Duluth on May 5. Both animals were tested at the University of Georgia state laboratory. Officials urge that anyone bitten or scratched by a stray animal, or if you know of anyone handling a stray call the Gwinnett County Animal Welfare and Enforcement Bite Office at 770-339-3200, ext. 5576.
