Transit Grant Awarded for I-85 Corridor Light Rail
A $600,000 federal grant was given for more analysis of a transit system in Gwinnett County. It is described as a "stake in the ground" for the project.
The possibility of a day when Gwinnett commuters can pop in their headphones and hop on a train to get to work got one step closer to reality last week with a $600,000 grant from the Federal Transit Administration. The Alternative Analysis grant is the first step for federal funding of the proposed I-85 Corridor Light Rail Transit System through the New Starts program. The Gwinnett Village CID, the Gwinnett Place CID and Gwinnett County will match the funds with $200,000 each, according to Chuck Warbington, Executive Director of the Gwinnett Village CID, bringing the total funds to over $1 million for in-depth analysis of a light rail to ease traffic congestion in the area.
