Norcross Patch contributor, novice runner recounts first time
taking part in July 4 Atlanta tradition.
In recent years, I had run several races, but none where I began under an enormous American flag, was sprinkled with holy water by a priest; doused by several spewing fire hydrants; slapped with a wrist bracelet coupon for a free appetizer; handed water melon slices, water, beer and smoothies; and cheered on by thousands of spectators along the route. That changed Monday as I took part in my first Peachtree Road Race. What a race it was! "The World's Largest 10K" was by far the most unique and fun race I've had the honor of taking part in, and was truly a community affair. Here's a glimpse into the Atlanta Independence Day race tradition through the eyes of a newbie: Race preparation In February, while training for the St. Patrick's Day …

Competitive runner enjoys lighter side of Atlanta Independence Day 10K tradition.
Christian Griffith looks forward to the moment after he’s conquered “heart attack hill,” deep in the heart of Midtown and about a mile remaining until reaching the finish line at Piedmont Park. At this point, as the 40-year-old runner nears the end of the iconic 6.2-mile Atlanta race, he welcomes the chance to down a cold adult beverage. “Chugging a carb-loaded beer at mile five feels pretty good,” Griffith said. “My favorite part of the Peachtree is the solid wall of ‘fans’ and locals cheering and handing food, orange slices ...and the occasional beer.” With 60,000 participants, the “World’s Largest 10K” race is far from ordinary. Griffith will be one of about 250 Norcross area runners taking part in the 42nd running of the early …

Atlanta Track Club also seeking sustainability certification.
The Peachtree Road Race will reach new heights this year with 5,000 additional runners, bringing a total of 60,000 participants to the start area in Buckhead on July 4. Known as the biggest 10K in the world, the race is growing for the first time since 1998, when the field increased to 55,000. Tracey Russell, race director for the Buckhead-based Atlanta Track Club, said course changes were made last year to determine if the race could accommodate the additional runners. “That’s why we felt confident that another 5,000 could be included,” she said. Even so, 2,000 applicants were turned away, she said, although as many as 10,000 plus have been turned away in the past. The ATC this year also went to an online lottery system to determine who …
