The Norcross City Council voted to move ahead with more parking at City Hall, and approved several other measures Monday night.
Norcross may soon get more parking downtown. After months of discussion, the City Council voted 4-1 Monday night to move forward with adding 11 parking spaces behind City Hall. The next step is to get proposals from companies for paving. The cost of the project is estimated to be about $41,000, and it would be paid for from sales taxes. The parking spaces are much needed for Norcross’s vibrant downtown, Councilman Ross Kaul said. There are currently 184 parking spots, but that’s not enough, he said. “We know people have to drive around constantly when they can’t find parking,” Kaul said. Lots of topics, including gateway signs, parking spaces and digital reader boards, were discussed among the Norcross City Council at the September Policy Work Session on Monday. Here's a quick overview: -Mayor Bucky Johnson proposed to start the process of considering a digital reader board made at the corner of Holcomb Bridge Road and Buford Highway. Councilman David McLeroy and Mayor Pro Tem Andrew Hixson, who both voted to table the digital reader proposal on Jones Street by the railroad tracks, voiced in favor of the motion. -The council also looked at some of the LCI study recommendations of preventing semi-trucks from crossing the railroad intersection at Holcomb Bridge Road. The city council has been debating the issue of adding parking spaces to Wingo Street and city hall for months now.
For some city meetings now, the Norcross City Council has debated and considered the issue of adding parking spaces downtown. At the latest policy work session, the proposal came up again, specifically for Wingo Street and Norcross City Hall. As shown in the images posted, a string of 22 parking spots would be created along the railroad tracks across 60 Wingo Street, and the parking lot to the left of city hall would be reconstructed and leveled so that it could hold 18 total spots instead of its current seven spaces. Regarding the gravel parking lot at the South Peachtree Street and Holcomb Bridge at the railroad tracks--use wood chips instead of gravel for parking areas. It is a renewable resource, and tree surgeons will dump wood chips free. You only pay for labor to spread it.   more ›
