Top Norcross Business News of 2012

The proposed gambling complex, the Greer building downtown and a new art gallery are just a few of the newsworthy business items that made it to the Norcross Patch list.

From small businesses to big businesses, Norcross is the home of a number of both. Here are some of the top company news in the Norcross area for 2012: The Gambling Complex: In February, news broke about a developer proposing to build a $1 billion gambling complex at the OFS fiber optic site, located in the Norcross area near I-85. The complex would have video lottery terminals, which the Georgia Lottery Board would have to approve but has not done so yet. Developer Dan O'Leary recently told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that, after extending the land contract seven times, he no longer controls the proposed property at OFS. Greer Building on South Peachtree: The Greer storefront on South Peachtree Street next to Dominick's was torn down…

Hip, Interactive Company Poised Well for Future Growth

Jason Montoya has been growing Noodlehead Studios and Noodlehead Marketing since he graduated high school in 2003.

Sitting down over coffee, Noodlehead Studios CEO Jason Montoya – a.k.a. the Noodlehead – recalled a story he’d overheard on a podcast about a company he seemed to admire, Atlanta-based Chick-fil-A. The tale tells a lot about the young man behind the downtown Norcross-based interactive marketing firm that specializes in graphic design, Web design, video production and new media marketing. Montoya explained that years before they’d become what they are today, Chick-fil-A was really in a tight battle with Boston Market for control of the fast-food chicken market. Boston Market was spending a bunch of money to open a plethora of new stores and everyone at Chick-fil-A was concerned they should be following suit. “Everyone was sitting around a …

ACityDiscount, a supplier of professional kitchen equipment, will be moving into a 60,000-square food space on Dawson Blvd in mid-February. Rec Warehouse used to be in the space.  “Our company has experienced tremendous growth in recent years” said CEO John Stack in a company statement. “We needed to find a facility that could better accommodate our growing customer base, enhance our employees’ work experience and make sense from a financial standpoint.” The 6286 Dawson Blvd location puts the company squarely in the middle of a discount shopping area, with lots of eyes from drivers on nearby I-85.  “We were …

RockTenn to Acquire Smurfit-Stone for $3.5 Billion

A local display and container company expands, bringing its total value to $9 billion.

Smurfit-Stone agreed to become the subsidy of Norcross’s RockTenn yesterday, bringing the total value of the new company to $9 billion, according to the company’s calculations. The headquarters will remain at the Norcross location. RockTenn currently produces paperboard, packaging and displays.  Just seven months ago Smurfit-Stone emerged from bankruptcy proceedings. In addition to creating packaging and containers, the Smurfit-Stone is one of the largest recycling companies in the world.  The transaction will be paid for with 50 percent RockTenn stock and 50 percent cash. The Board of Directors of both companies unanimously approved the acquisition, which expands RockTenn’s reach further into the Midwest and West Coast.  “We always say we…

One Last Shopping Trip at BJ's

After more than six years in Gwinnett County, BJ's Wholesale Club announced Wednesday that it's closing its Norcross location Jan. 17.

Perhaps another sign of the economic times, perhaps inevitable. Either way, on Jan. 17 a large retail space will become available at the Jimmy Carter Blvd and Highway 141. After more than six years at the location, BJ's Wholesale Club is shuttering.  The Massachusetts-based company announced Wednesday that Georgia stores in McDonough and Austell would close in addition to two locations in Florida and North Carolina. The company estimates that altogether the total charges associated with the announcements will be between $42 and $44 million after-tax, or $0.78 to $0.82 per share in the fiscal fourth quarter ending Jan. 29. "Our management team has been working for several months on a strategic plan to optimize our performance and build …

Keeping Business Local, One T-Shirt at a Time

Norcross-based Platinum Sportswear manufactures a full line of apparel entirely in the United States.

They are just three words on a clothing tag, but for Norcross's Platinum Sportswear the words "Made in U.S.A.," symbolize a business philosophy that goes beyond manufacturing a quality product. In a country where it is becoming harder and harder for the average consumer to find products made in on our soil, the company is unique. Platinum Sportswear owner Matthew Litsky said he wants to keep jobs in this country, which is one of the main reasons why Platinum Sportswear operations have remained here. As with many businesses, Litsky has gone through a long developmental process beginning with a simple clothing store owned by his father, who had been previously been laid off by Fruit of the Loom. "He decided he was going to go into business …

"When we learned that a corporation like Suniva was searching for both their corporate headquarters and manufacturing plant location, we became very assertive with our efforts," said Partnership Gwinnett Vice President Mark Nisano.
