There's an App for That: Dieting in the New Year

Several phone apps are available to help with those New Year's resolutions.

From Loganville Patch I began working out with my daughter several weeks ago and at the end of each "event" in the gym, she pulled out her phone and began TEXTING! I mean, seriously ... Actually, she wasn't texting, she was logging in her information to an app on her phone that keeps up with her diet, her exercise, and her general progress with her program to get fit.  She uses myfitnesspal to track her progress. Even when we work with a trainer, she puts that workout in ... and when she stops at Taco Bell on the way home, she logs that in. Myfitnesspal is a free app that boasts: "We believe — and medical studies prove — that the best way to lose weight and keep it off forever is to simply keep track of the foods you eat. We're on a mission to help you cross that resolution off your list early. First up: fitness.

It's that time of year again. Norcross residents, along with the rest of the world, are making lists and checking them twice--not for Santa, but to chart their hopes and goals for the new year. Macy Lee, a twenty-something barista at Starbucks in Norcross, wants to pick up her running habit again, having found little time and less motivation to do so over the holidays. Fitness probably shows up on most people's lists, but it is all but impossible to go from couch potato to 6 a.m. runner overnight, now matter how good it feels to write that down as a goal. And the recent bouts of freezing weather in Norcross have deterred all but the most hardcore outdoor fitness enthusiasts, so don't expect to keep your resolution to complete a few laps …
