Hundreds came out to celebrate "America's Night Out Against Crime."
Despite the overcast Tuesday night, more than four hundred people attended Norcross' first annual National Night Out. The event, dubbed "America's Night Out Against Crime," brought in members from every aspect of the community. Local residents, city officials, police officers, nonprofits, businesses and more came out to take part in the kids' activities, prizes, booths, police demos, and food and drinks. Norcross' NNO is encouraging citizens of the city to sign up for the private social network that helps residents connect with their neighborhoods.
Organizers of Norcross' National Night Out recently signed up for the Nextdoor website, a private social network that helps neighbors connect with one another. NNO, the nationwide crime prevention event that will be celebrated locally Aug. 7 in Norcross' Thrasher Park, has partnered with Nextdoor since they share the same goal: "to let criminals know that neighborhoods are organized and taking a stand against crime," according to a press release. With the Nextdoor service, residents are able to connect with one another on neighborhood-oriented projects. Users can organize block parties, track down babysitters, plan for emergencies and flashlight walks, and more. Through the free website, neighbors also can create private neighborhood …

The Norcross Police Department Foundation presented a check of $2,450 to the city police last Thursday. The funds were raised from booth sales and sponsors for the city's first National Night Out, the Aug. 7th celebration of America's "Night Out Against Crime." "It's a fantastic program," said Norcross Police Capt. Clay Thompson. "Anything that brings the community together, brings interacting between the community and the police department, it's a positive thing." The funds will go to a number of projects within the Norcross Police Department, including the Cool Cops, a body armor air conditioning piece for on-duty officers. Do you wish for a safer neighborhood for you and your family? Here's your chance. The Norcross Police Department Foundation is hosting a National Night Out contest called Project 365 that will help with safety and beautification. Locals who enter can win a chance to work one-on-one with the foundation and Norcross PD to revitalize their neighborhood. For a full year, the winner of the project will create and maintain the Norcross Police PACT (Police and Citizens Together) Program; beautify the neighborhood, whether it's through a community garden, landscaping or public art; and have a quarterly neighborhood cleanup campaign through Breathe-Green Gwinnett. Sponsors, volunteers and exhibitors are needed for the city's first NNO.
The Norcross Police Department Foundation is asking for sponsors for the city's first annual National Night Out. NNO is a national awareness night to help promote crime prevention and strengthen police-community partnerships, businesses and citizen involvement.
