Home Norcross Hosts First Yarn-Bombing Class

Saturday's workshop was filled with worker bees, knitting and crocheting for the March event.

Home Norcross was a buzz last Saturday with a room full of women knitting and crocheting in preparation for the yarn-bombing event that will hit Historic Norcross at the end of March. Yarn bombing involves displaying knitted or crocheted art on the streets, whether it's on a bench, a lamp post or a tree. About a dozen women showed for Saturday's class, where many learned how to crochet and knit for the first time and get a better grasp on the concept of "bombing" the town. Local resident Ada Poggio said she hadn't touched crochet since she was 17, but when yarn-bombing frontrunner and Norcross Arts Alliance member Arlene Beckles told her about the project, she gained an interest. "I'm home right now, kind of in between jobs, so I wanted to…

Historic Norcross: A Railroad Town with an Afterlife

Ludie’s Legacy is a Love of Nature

Ludie Simpson loved the woods on her family’s farm so much she made sure it would remain a preserve for all time.

On your next woodsy hike through the Simpsonwood retreat, be sure to tip your walking stick in appreciation to a woman who loved those same soaring hardwoods, gentle evergreens and flowing river waters so much so many years ago that she made a plan to preserve it for all of us to enjoy today. Ludie Simpson was born in Norcross on December 10, 1887, and became a teacher with the Atlanta and the Gwinnett County school systems until her retirement in 1957. Ludie loved to travel the world, but upon her retirement Ludie returned to live in a home she inherited along North Peachtree Street in the downtown district of Norcross. When Ludie Simpson inherited her family’s farm, acquired in the land lottery of 1820, now the area that is Simpsonwood …

Thanks Danny, Martha Simpson Nesbit is recorded describing the land of her family from 141 to Holcomb Bridge, but apparantly she may have given it it too much property. Still in all most of the land along that protionof the river was SImpson property. This is one of the great things about getting the history out there in public view- I continue to learn tidbits of facts...important because if we …   more ›

Norcross Celebrates Arbor Day

A tree planting ceremony was held Friday in honor of Arbor Day. The festivities continue today.

The Norcross Arbor Day celebration kicked off this Friday with a tree planting ceremony in the community garden across the street from the Welcome Center. Arbor Day is a holiday that encourages people and groups to plant and care for trees. The Tree Preservation Board was present to help with the planting of a brown turkey fig tree that will most likely still be standing long after we’re all dead and gone. “They do get fairly large, up to 60 to 80 feet,” said guest speaker Joel Moon, the master forester from RockTenn, the local business that recycles tree products. “I think more typical is 40 to 50 feet.” He said we can expect the fig tree to become very broad and also suspects that the local squirrels will enjoy the fresh figs immensely. …

Art Fest Spotlight: Heart of Glass

Norcross Arts Fest artist Laurel Johns discusses how she started staining glass.

Living on a secluded island with a beautiful coast is a dream for any crazed beach lover, but for stained-glass artist Laurel Johns, it's reality. "I love being a hermit," she said. "An artist hermit on an island." Seven years ago, she convinced her husband to build their home on Hird Island, a barrier island in south Georgia where travelers can only get there by either boat or plane. Even though she doesn't live there year-round (she and her husband spend four months of the year at their second home in Tenants Harbor, Maine), Johns also has her own art studio on Hird where she runs her one-woman business, Grey Dog Studio. Johns and her business return to the Norcross Art Festival (Saturday and Sunday at Thrasher Park) for her third year …

Sit Down for Charity at the Norcross Art Fest

Here's a fun way to support the arts in schools. Stop by the Chairs for Charity booth at the Norcross Art Fest and bid on your favorite chair in the silent auction.

The Norcross Art Fest is this weekend and students all over Norcross have been getting ready by painting chairs. Chairs for Charity raises money, which goes to the participating schools' art programs, by having students paint chairs and selling them to the highest bidder. The silent auction runs during the Art Fest, ending at 3 p.m. Sunday. The festival is scheduled 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday in historic downtown Norcross. This year the students are not just decorating chairs — they’re also painting mailboxes. And that’s not the only expansion. Last year’s Chairs for Charity booth was so popular, they’re getting two tents and doubling the space this year. “We raised just over $1,400 [last year],” said Chairs for …

Angel Food Ministries Ceases Operations

After 17 years in operation national organization announced it is closing its doors for good.

As was the case a couple of weeks ago when Angel Food Ministries announced it wouldn't be able to fulfill its September orders, a statement on the website Wednesday announced the organization's final demise. "Angel Food Ministries has considered many options regarding our future. At this time we regret to inform you that we have not found a solution that will allow Angel Food Ministries to continue to distribute food on a monthly basis and have decided to cease operations. We realize the pressure that this places on our host sites, community food banks and customers," the statement read. It went on to note that a small group of former employees and food vendors were working to find a way to serve those who had come to rely on AFM during …
