GCPS Rejects Ivy Prep -- Twice

The Peachtree Corners charter school is in its first year with the school system. A proposed boys' charter school application also is denied.

The Gwinnett school system and Ivy Prep of Peachtree Corners are in limbo again. The GCPS board voted Thursday in Suwanee not to renew the all-girls charter school's contract; Ivy Prep had sought a five-year contract after receiving a one-year deal for 2011-12. However, the system gave the Peachtree Corners school 30 days to address "deficiencies" cited if it wishes to reapply. A GCPS statement said Ivy Prep's petition "does not clearly identify a unique and innovative curriculum design and instructional program to address the needs of female students." Also, the GCPS said sufficient documentation was not provided to indicate "need or parent support," only "community-based partner support." And the proposed budget was "greater than the …

Ivy Preparatory Academy Expanding

The all-girls GCPS charter school received state approval to open two new charter schools in neighboring DeKalb County.

On Monday, the State Board of Education approved Ivy Preparatory Academy's petition to open two new charter schools. The approval allows the all-girls school, located in Gwinnett County to expand to DeKalb County. In a special called meeting the board approved petitions for a K-12 all-boys school and a K-12 all-girls school, submitted by Nina Gilbert, founder of Ivy Preparatory Academy in Peachtree Corners. The schools are tentatively scheduled to open as K-6 schools on Sept. 6. Negotiations are on-going to house both schools in the building of the former Peachtree Hope Charter School located at 1807 Memorial Drive. Ivy Prep's Gwinnett school will continue to operate as a Gwinnett County Public Charter School and receive funding from the …

Ivy Preparatory Academy May Open DeKalb Campus

State Board of Education to meet Monday to decide on recommending a Special State Charter for the DeKalb-based school.

It's been a roller coaster ride for head of school Nina Gilbert since the Georgia Supreme Court ruled that Ivy Preparatory Academy, an all-girls charter school in Peachtree Corners, could no longer operate as a commissioned charter school. Ivy Prep's future was finally decided this month when the school's board accepted Gwinnett County Public School's offer to operate as a Gwinnett Charter school. That was the good news, the not so good news was that the funding per student was cut substantially from what it received as a commissioned charter school. And there would be no funding from the Gwinnett school system for nearly half of its students. The school currently enrolls some 480 students of which 190 live in DeKalb County. Under the …

Ivy Preparatory Academy Joins Gwinnett's Public School System

The local charter school will be one of five charter schools to operate in 2011-12 as part of the Gwinnett County Public School system.

Gwinnett County Public Schools recently announced that Ivy Preparatory Academy, a former commissioned charter school located in Peachtree Corners, will join GCPS's four other charter schools that operate as part of the county's public school system. Ivy Prep, an all-girls school with some 480 students had been operating as one of 16 Georgia Charter Commissioned Schools since opening in the fall of 2008. However, the Georgia Supreme Court ruled on May 16 of this year that the Georgia Charter Schools Commission did not have the authority to establish schools and direct local monies to fund commission-approved schools. The Gwinnett County school board had offered a charter school contract to Nina Gilbert, Head of School for Ivy Prep, on June …

Ivy Preparatory Academy Receives Charter Approval from State

The State Board of Education approved GCPS's charter school offer.

The 450 Ivy Preparatory Academy's students whose future had been in limbo since the Georgia Supreme Court's ruling last month, will be returning to the school's Peachtree Corners campus to attend classes this fall after all. Ivy Prep, an all-girls school, was among 16 former commission charter schools whose future was in jeopardy when the Supreme Court ruled the commissioned charter schools unconstitutional. The decision was brought about from a 2009 complaint that Gwinnett County Public Schools had filed that argued local school districts should have sole authority in opening and funding local charter schools. The State Supreme Court ruled 4-3 in GCPS's favor. Tuesday the State Board of Education approved State-Chartered Special School  …

Ivy Prep Declines GCPS Charter Offer

Leaders of the all-girls charter school located in Peachtree Corners decided against being a part of the Gwinnett school system.

In a surprise announcement at Gwinnett County Public School's monthly board meeting Thursday night, Ivy Preparatory Academy's head of school, Nina Gilbert told the five-member school board that she would not accept its offer to become a Gwinnett charter school. The all-girls school located in Peachtree Corners had lost its charter last month when the Georgia Supreme Court ruled that commissioned charter schools were unconstitutional. Standing before the board Gilbert said, "Your proposed funding was much lower than what we received as a commissioned school and very close to what we receive as a state special charter school. "Therefore, we respectfully rescind our request for approval from Gwinnett County School Board, and we ask that you …

Ivy Preparatory Academy's Future Still Undecided

The Supreme Court's recent decision keeps the Peachtree Corners charter school in limbo.

Ivy Preparatory Academy, the all-girls commissioned charter school located in Peachtree Corners had hoped that the Georgia Supreme Court might reverse its earlier decision that ruled against its charter. But the decision that the school's charter was unconstitutional was upheld yesterday. In a briefly worded statement, the Georgia Supreme Court reconfirmed its position saying; "Upon consideration of the Motion for Reconsideration filed in this case, it is ordered that it be hereby denied." The Supreme Court of Georgia denied the motion for reconsideration filed in the charter schools case (Gwinnett County School District v. Cox, S10A1773). As with the original decision, the vote was 4-to-3 to deny the motion. Sen. Fran Millar (R-Atlanta), …

Special Subcommittee to Study Short-Term Solution for Charter Schools

State Sen. Fran Millar chairs a committee to seek a means for the state's 16 commissioned charter schools to remain open.

The fate of Ivy Preparatory Academy, a commissioned charter school in Peachtree Corners, and the state's 15 other charter schools is still unclear after the Georgia Supreme Court ruled the commissioned charter schools unconstitutional last month. Ivy Prep, an all-girls school with some 480 students, may have found a way to keep its doors open come fall. The school has been in talks with Gwinnett County Public School leaders to work out details to become a Gwinnett charter school. In the meantime, Fran Millar, State Senator (Dist. 40) Chairman of the Senate Education Committee who also chairs a Special Subcommittee, met Friday with leaders from a number of the affected commissioned charter schools to address the Supreme Court ruling that …

Gwinnett School Officials and Ivy Prep Meet to Discuss Options

Ivy Preparatory Academy, an all-girls charter school in Peachtree Corners may receive a life line from GCPS.

Gwinnett County Public Schools officials met Tuesday with the beleaguered Ivy Preparatory Academy's governing board to find a way to keep the commissioned charter school's doors open in the fall. Ivy Prep, an all-girls charter school located in Peachtree Corners, was one of the 16 commissioned charter schools that was affected by the Georgia Supreme Court that ruled the commissioned charter schools were unconstitutional. "School district staff met again today with the appropriate people representing Ivy Preparatory Academy to discuss options for allowing the school to continue operations in the upcoming school year," said Gwinnett County Public School's Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks in a statement issued May 31. "I feel optimistic at …

Area Charter School Dealt Blow, Protests at Capitol

Ivy Preparatory Academy, an all-girls school, threatened by Georgia Supreme Court ruling.

Monday Ivy Preparatory Academy, an all-girls commissioned charter school with some 480 students located in Peachtree Corners, was dealt a big blow when the Georgia Supreme Court ruled its charter unconstitutional. In a 4-3 decision the high court ruled against the school and 15 other Georgia "commissioned" charter schools, as Patch reported yesterday.  Ivy Preparatory Academy is one of the 16 charter schools that was not approved by a local school board but were approved by the state-appointed Georgia Charter Commission thus were given the designation as a "commissioned charter" school.
