Deal Lowers HOT Lane Rates, Seeks Further Changes

The governor says he will pursue a federal waiver on the number of passengers required for exemption.

Gov. Nathan Deal announced Thursday afternoon that he will implement changes to the new high-occupancy toll lanes on I-85, just four days after the lanes were opened. Starting today, the rates will be lowered. “Looking at what we’ve learned from our first four work days with the HOT lanes, I’ve asked SRTA to improve utilization of the express lanes,” Deal said in a released statement. “In the short term, the toll rate will lower.…” The actual amount charged will continue to be variable to control the speed and volume in the lanes.  Deal also points to access to the lanes as an issue. “Even before the lanes opened, we knew we needed to improve the access and exit points in the southbound direction. Georgia Governor To Examine I-85 HOT Lanes

The toll lanes that opened Oct. 1 have caused controversy.

The controversy continues over the new HOT lanes on I-85, and now Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal is getting involved. According to WSB-TV, Deal says he will "take a very close look and see if the outline that has been put in place is actually working." The lanes opened on Oct. 1 and affect commuters in Norcross and many other Gwinnett County cities. Also, a Snellville commuter has created a Facebook page for people to voice their opposition to the new lanes and the Peach Pass that is required to use them. We'd like to know your experiences. Tell us in the comments section what your experience has been.

Evans, executive director of the State Road and Tollway Authority (SRTA). “This all-electronic commuting choice gives registered Peach Pass customers access to a more reliable travel option in the I-85 corridor. The Express Lanes concept has been proven successful in eight other cities, and we are excited about its ability to positively impact I-85 traffic and keep Metro Atlantans moving.” Motorists have seen sign changes, with the permanent Express Lane text now featuring the Peach Pass logo.  Final Road I-85 Express Lane …

I would have no problem with this if it was a new lane funded with private money and the toll was to pay for construction and make a profit for whoever funded it. Since this is an existing lane that has already been paid for using taxpayer money, how is this not double taxation?   more ›

Motorists intending to travel in what are currently HOV (high occupancy vehicle) lanes may now register for the Peach Pass -- a small electronic sticker that will be used to bill motorists for their time in the HOT lane. For the past several months, the Georgia Department of Transportation has been working to convert the HOV lanes to HOT lanes. The $11.7 million project includes the installation of tolling technology and equipment, new signs and new sign structures along 16 miles of I-85 express lanes in Gwinnett and DeKalb counties.
