Honor Guard named Best Dressed in the nation.
The Gwinnett Fire Honor Guard Unit is the best dressed in the country. On Wednesday, the unit was presented with a special award for the 2011 Fire Service Uniform of the Year during a small ceremony at Gwinnett County Fire Headquartersin Lawrenceville. The Honor Guard had been in the same uniform for the last quarter-century. When fire investigator, Ira Burnette, took over as HG Commander a few years ago, he pushed for an updated look. "I wanted something more form-fitting, that would kind of make us stand out from other agencies...this idea definitely did it", Burnette said. The uniform is similar to the ones worn by the United States Marine Corps. The Honor Guards had complete control of the look, deciding everything from the red trim …

Updated May 9, 10:15 a.m. Chuck Cimarik was driving down Bostic Avenue in Historic Norcross yesterday afternoon when he heard an unmistakable sound: a hissing sound usually associated with a gas leak. He said he also smelled the odor of gas. When he parked his car to take a closer look at the city property, he found that a gas meter on the side of the building had been damaged, then called the authorities. Cpt. Tommy Rutledge of the Gwinnett County Fire Department said that firefighters from Station 1 were the first to respond at 3:19 p.m., after being called in by the Norcross Police Department. Rutledge said that it looked to those who responded as if a tree fell and struck the gas meter. "There was also an active leak and a strong …

Gwinnett firefighters warn that venturing onto frozen ponds, lakes and rivers can lead to tragedy.
It's been almost five days of below-freezing temperatures and not only are the streets covered with ice, there are also small ponds and lakes that have developed a thin layer of ice that covers the surface. While it may appear that the ice is solid enough to walk on, the Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services department warns that it could lead to deadly consequences. Just last January three teen-aged boys fell through the ice in the middle of a neighborhood pond in Dacula. While one managed to get back to shore, the other two were unable to get out and died shortly after arriving at the hospital. “Our goal is to prevent such a tragedy from ever happening again,” said Gwinnett Fire Captain Tommy Rutledge. Firefighters warn that a frozen …
