Casey Snyder will replace the retiring Bill Myers as chief effective May 25.
Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services, which serves Gwinnett's 805,000 residents, is getting a new leader and a revamped facility. Gwinnett officials announced Tuesday that Casey Snyder, a 24-year veteran of the department, will replace Bill Myers, who will retire on May 24 after 30 years with the county. Also, the county announced that a $1.3 million expansion of Gwinnett’s Fire Academy will begin this summer. A gas leak Monday afternoon on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Duluth caused traffic to stop and about 15 businesses to evacuate.

The Gwinnett Fire Department reported that Atlanta Gas Light brought a gas leak outside 2870 Peachtree Industrial Blvd. in Duluth under control at 1:18 p.m. Monday (April 8). Fire equipment was dispatched to the scene about 11:16 a.m., Capt. Tommy Rutledge reported in a news release. Both lanes of PIB, which were closed to traffic, were reopened, and merchants were allowed back into their businesses in the strip shopping center near the gas leak. The leak was also located near Duluth Package Store. About 15 businesses were evacuated. No injuries were reported. The leak was caused by a construction crew that hit a 2-inch gas line while boring in the area, Rutledge said. See also:

Investigators are asking anyone to come forward if they have any information on the fire, which took place in Lilburn near unincorporated Norcross.
A fire that destroyed a home in Lilburn last Friday has been determined to be caused by an act of arson to cover up a burglary, according to Gwinnett Fire. According to Gwinnett Fire spokesman Lt. Colin Rhoden, investigators deemed the incident as arson after finding several points of fire origin in the house, which is located on the 5200 block of Stafford Drive. Additionally, the home's residents told fire investigators about specific items that were taken from the home. Just before the fire, three Hispanic or ethnic males were seen leaving the residence with some of its contents, Rhoden continued. From Lilburn Patch A fire at a Lilburn residence sent one person to the hospital Monday afternoon, according to Gwinnett Fire spokesman Lt. Colin Rhoden. The fire occurred in the 700 block of Stacey Court. "The patient sustained injuries from high heat and smoke, and was conscious and breathing," Rhoden said in a press release. The occupant was found in a room near where the fire started, according to the report, and taken to the hospital by ambulance. From Peachtree Corners An apparent grease fire in a Peachtree Corners apartment sent Gwinnett firefighters to the Valencia Park apartments on late Saturday (Feb. 2) afternoon. Lt. Colin Rhoden, spokesman for the Gwinnett fire department said when crews arrived "they noticed smoke coming from the two-story apartment building." Firefighters quickly evaluated the eight-unit building, doused the blaze in the kitchen and searched for any other fires. A quick-thinking restaurant manager evacuated customers and employees when he saw smoke in the back of the building around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
From Peachtree Corners Patch Dreamland BBQ, the popular restaurant located on Peachtree Parkway in Peachtree Corners, caught fire Wednesday evening around 5:30 p.m. The fire appears to have caused extensive damage and is under investigation. Gwinnett firefighters were called around 5:20 p.m. and had the fire under control shortly after 6 p.m. said Lt. Colin Rhoden, spokesman for the county fire department. One person was sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation from a Sunday morning fire that damaged eight units at the Lake Sweetwater Apartments in unincorporated Lawrenceville. The apartments are located at 3100 Sweetwater Road. According to Gwinnett Fire spokesman Lt. Colin Rhoden, 14 people were displaced by the fire, which was reported by a 911 caller around 7 a.m. The fire was under control before 8 a.m. Rhoden reported heavy damage to second-floor apartments on the backside of the building. Residents from 14 units were evacuated. No other injuries were reported. Update, 2:15 p.m. At around 1:45 p.m., Gwinnett Fire turned over the incident to clean-up company Hepaco on the Jimmy Carter Boulevard ramp form I-85 North. "The clean-up operation is not expected to take very long to complete," said fire spokesman Ct. Tommy Rutledge in a press release. Police and a Department of Transportation HERO unit are still at the scene for traffic control since one lane of the ramp has been re-opened. According the release, the spill of industrial soap was less than 30 gallons and appears to be accidental. It is believed it was erupted from a cap on the tanker, but it's unknown as to how it began leaking. The soap's main ingredient is Naptha, a flammable substance that firefighters were able to quickly identify. …

Updated 9:15 a.m., April 22 One man was killed and a woman was reported in serious condition after Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services and other agencies responded to a boating accident on Lake Lanier early Sunday. The two-boat collision is believed to have occurred in the dark approximately 200 yards from the face of the dam back toward Lower Overlook Park inside Gwinnett County.
