County to Purchase Norcross Water System

The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners approved an intergovernmental agreement Tuesday to purchase the water and wastewater systems from the city of Norcross.

The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners approved an intergovernmental agreement Tuesday to purchase the water and wastewater systems from the city of Norcross. The Norcross City Council is expected to hear public comment in March and act on the agreement in April, according to a news release. If approved by both governments, nearly 2,200 city water and sewer customers will be billed directly by the Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources starting in May or June. “I’m very proud of the way our crews respond to water and sewer emergencies for our current customers and know that we’ll provide the same great service to our newest customers,” Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash said in the release. Since we are selling our water and sewer systems to the county, why don't we sell our power to Ga. Power. Co. and let the county take over the police department and then we want need any employees. So let the county run the city and maybe we will get some streets paved.   more ›

Norcross Baseball to Receive New Scoreboards

The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners approved a deal with the Norcross Youth Baseball and Softball Association during a board meeting Tuesday. The board also smoothed the way for some key transportation projects along Peachtree Industrial Boulevar

The Gwinnett County commissioners acted Tuesday (February 19) to smooth the way for a couple of key transportation projects. The board authorized the eventual condemnation of 17 properties along SR 20 (Peachtree Industrial Boulevard to Burnette Trail) and the SR 20 Bridge (Burnette Trail to James Burgess Road) projects. All are in District 1 territory. Gwinnett Transportation Director Kim Conroy explained that the properties will be condemned in the county's name, and eventually will be relinquished back to the state. To facilitate this, the Georgia Department of Transportation will reimburse Gwinnett about $1.8 million for the transactions. Gwinnett BOC Chairman: Transportation Is Top Priority

During their Tuesday meeting, the Gwinnett Board of Commissioners approved many transportation projects, including ones along I-85 and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.

Transportation projects were plentiful on the Gwinnett Board of Commissioners' agenda Tuesday (February 5). And the commissioners approved several, with some price tags ranging into seven figures. Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash said that transportation is a priority for the commissioners in 2013, and that Transportation Director Kim Conroy had been given the signal to move ahead with some projects. The grant to build a diverging diamond interchange (DDI) at Jimmy Carter Boulevard and I-85 was approved Tuesday by the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners. Construction will begin this spring on the Norcross bridge and is expected to be completed within a year, according to a news release. Gwinnett’s first project of this type is currently under construction a few exits away, at Pleasant Hill Road. NHS Football Receives Special Recognition From Gwinnett BOC

The Blue Devils state championship team and coaches were presented a "Resolution of Recognition" from Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners.

After winning the school's first state football championship title in December 2012, the Norcross High School varsity football team was in the spotlight again on Tuesday night. The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners invited the team to its monthly meeting and presented a Resolution of Recognition to the Blue Devils for the win. "I was so excited watching the championship game," Commissioner Lynette Howard told the coaching staff and team. "It was a magical time, everyone was so excited. Nash: Special Election Coming for Gwinnett BOC Post

The Gwinnett BOC chairman does not know a date, according to a media report.

Gwinnett Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash said a special election will be held to fill the unexpired term of departed Commissioner Shirley Lasseter, according to a media report. WSB-TV made the report in an interview with Nash that was taped Friday. According to the report, Nash does not know when the election will be held, but that it likely will not be before the July 31 primary. The term expires Dec. 31. Also, the District 1 seat held by Lasseter will be vacant for Tuesday's possible vote on Briscoe Field privatization. Lasseter, whose district included Duluth and Suwanee, resigned Thursday after pleading guilty to federal bribery charges. Her term expires Dec. 31. The July 31 primary will determine the next District 1 commissioner. …

Benefit Account Set Up for Lasseter

The support is already is plentiful online for former Gwinnett County Commissioner Shirley Lasseter. A friend has set up an account at a Duluth bank to benefit the former Duluth mayor, who pleaded guilty Thursday to federal bribery charges.  Jerry Robb, a friend of Lasseter, posted the notice of the benefit account on Facebook "An account at the Gwinnett Community Bank in Duluth has been set up to help Shirley. For anyone interested in donating money..Checks should be made out to Shirley's Fund, account #0040946. Thanks so much!!" The bank is located on Buford Highway. Lasseter apparently was in serious financial straits before her guilty plea. Her Duluth home was foreclosed on in 2009. Also, Robb was quoted in a recent media article as …
