The December 2012 trip to Germany and France was to enrich ties with companies and open new ones.
A delegation of Norcross and Gwinnett business and government leaders targeted several European businesses in a December 2012 trip to Europe. Norcross Mayor Bucky Johnson, Suwanee Mayor Jimmy Burnette and Gwinnett District 2 Commissioner Lynette Howard were among those who traveled to France and Germany for six days to strengthen business ties with companies there. The delegation was led by Gwinnett Chamber VP Nick Masino, a former Suwanee mayor. -- How do you feel about Gwinnett's business scene? Share your views in the comments below. Masino explained recently that several companies from France and Germany already are doing business in Gwinnett. So the mission in part was to visit with officials from those companies on their home turf. …

Gwinnett leaders think the libraries are necessary, but with a different approach.
From Suwanee Patch After another million-dollar budget cut to the Gwinnett County library system, county leaders think it's time for that organization to change its approach. "I would encourage the library to look at a new business model," Gwinnett District 2 Commissioner Lynette Howard said Thursday (January 3) as the county's elected leaders passed the 2013 budget. Amid a still-tight revenue situation, commissioners cut $1 million in materials from the library's budget, the latest of several large reductions to that system. Howard noted that the library branches "need to be a community center," but that current plans of coping with their situation are "not working," and she pledged to do "anything I can do" to help. -- What do you think …

The overall figure of $1.4 billion includes adjustments for such things as SDS-mandated service districts.
From Suwanee Patch Gwinnett County's elected leaders unanimously approved Thursday a $1.4 billion budget for 2013. As with previous years, there were cuts, tough choices -- and no pay raises for county employees. But there also are signs that the economic woes that have plagued the county in recent years may be bottoming out. District 1 Commissioner Jace Brooks of Suwanee, who is beginning his first full term on the board, noted that the Gwinnett tax digest is projected to decline about 1.9 percent this year. That would be the smallest such decline in recent years, and the reduction in tax revenues has been a major problem for Gwinnett budgets recently. -- What are your thoughts on the Gwinnett 2013 budget, and future budgets? The Gwinnett Board of Commissioners will hold a special called meeting Monday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m. to allow public comment on the proposed 2013 budget. The planned $1.3 billion budget, a reduction from the 2012 spending plan, was rolled out in November. However, no formal vote on the 2013 budget is planned before January. Monday's meeting will be at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center, 75 Langley Drive in Lawrenceville. The 2013 budget is the first full county budget document since the Service Delivery Strategy (SDS0 settlement was reached in February 2012 between the county and cities in the Gwinnett Municipal Association. That settlement, among other things, mandated certain payments from the county to the cities and called for…

The former Suwanee City Council member will attend his first Gwinnett meeting Tuesday.
Jace Brooks, elected in July to represent Gwinnett BOC District 1, will be sworn into office Monday, Sept. 17. According to a Gwinnett County news release Friday, Brooks will attend his first Gwinnett BOC meeting Tuesday, Sept. 18. Brooks, a Suwanee City Council member from 2002-12, will be filling the remainder of the term that was vacated when Shirley Lasseter resigned in May amid federal bribery charges. He was the only qualifier for the special election in November to fill the unexpired term. Brooks was elected in July to the full term that begins in 2013. The special election to fill the unexpired term of former Gwinnett commissioner Shirley Lasseter will be conducted the same day as the general election.
Nov. 6, the same day as the 2012 general election, has been decided as the date for a special election to fill the unexpired term of former Gwinnett County commissioner Shirley Lasseter, according to Joe Sorenson, communications director for the county government. Candidate qualifying dates for the special election to fill the District 1 seat on the commission have not yet been determined, Sorenson told Duluth Patch late Monday. Lasseter resigned May 31 after pleading guilty in U.S. District Court in Atlanta to accepting bribes in exchange for her support of a proposed development in her district. The District 1 commission term expires on Dec. 31, 2012. Because Lasseter resigned with more than 180 days left in her term, a replacement to …
The Suwanee accountant and the former Suwanee Council member already have qualified for the regular District 1 vote.
The coming special election for the Gwinnett Board of Commissioners could become a contest between the people who already have qualified for the regular election. Suwanee accountant Laurie McClain said Sunday that she intends to qualify for the special voting for District 1, and former Suwanee City Council member Jace Brooks indicated strong interest in doing so. When do you think Gwinnett will hold the special election for District 1 commissioner? Tell us in the comments below. "I very much want to be the next District 1 county commissioner and the sooner the better," McClain, a Duluth resident, said in an email Sunday. Gwinnett commissioners and public hear consultants' thoughts on privatizing the county-owned Briscoe Field.
The Gwinnett Board of Commissioners is ready for the next step in the potential privatization of the county-owned airport. But don't expect to book a cross-country flight out of Briscoe Field anytime soon. A public-private partnership on the airport "is not a decision to allow pasenger service," Infrastructure Management Group official Steve Steckler told commissioners Tuesday at an information session in Lawrenceville. The commissioners' hearing with the consulting firm was to hear their thoughts on privatization and the Request For Proposal process. Pros and cons of commercial passenger service were discussed, but it is clear that that is another decision from whether to privatize Briscoe. A private operator could have a "vision" of …
