Proposals due in January for 'headquarters hotel' near arena complex in Duluth.
Gwinnett Center officials formally have issued the Request For Proposals (RFP) for a "headquarters hotel" that would be part of the Duluth center/arena complex. Deadline for interested developers is Friday, Jan. 13. The RFP says that an "upper-upscale" facility of at least 300 rooms is desired, as well as meeting and ballroom space and self-contained parking. Also, the hotel should be capable of expanding by at least 100 rooms. Executive Director Lisa Anders of the Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau told Patch last month that this type of hotel has been a desire of tourism officials for some time. She noted that hotel occupancy in Gwinnett has been good in 2011. Anders said the RFP would be "testing the waters." “We originally went …

An RFP is being prepared to gauge interest in such a development.
It's still in the planning stages, but Gwinnett tourism officials want to gauge interest in a headquarters hotel that would be part of the Gwinnett Center/Arena complex. Gwinnett tourism official Lisa Anders noted that Gwinnett County officials are preparing and would handle the Request For Proposals. The motivation comes from the Convention and Visitors Bureau, which operates the arena and the center. Anders noted that hotel occupancy has been good in Gwinnett in 2011, though rates are slowly working upward. A "headquarters hotel" has been needed for a long time, she added, but officials don't want "just another hotel." She said an RFP would be "testing the waters." In the Sugarloaf Parkway/I-85 area, near the center and arena, there are …

Just because you are trying to get healthy in 2011 doesn't mean you can't get out and have fun this weekend.
Ah yes, the weekend after the New Year's celebration. That means just one thing in this part of the country. Football. No, not the kind with short shorts that can end with a score of 1-0. The kind where dudes paint their faces and watch half-time shows featuring Mylie Cyrus. You know, American football. If for some reason that doesn't sound appealing, here are some alternatives. 1. Unless you have some serious cleanliness issues, you won't see much wildlife sitting on your couch. Either way, get up, grab the family and head to the Wonders of Winter Wildlife at Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center. You'll learn about their animals, take a hike and do some crafting. Here is a little more information. 2. Saint Ignatius is putting on a …
