Football season is just four months away, and here's another reminder. The 2013 football schedules are out for Norcross schools, as well as others in the Georgia High School Association. Greater Atlanta Christian is one of the six Gwinnett teams who won their Tuesday night matches.
Six Gwinnett County girls soccer teams won second-round matches Tuesday night, advancing to the Georgia High School Association quarterfinals, which begin Friday, May 10. Greater Atlanta Christian is playing against Union City in the Class AA title Wednesday in the second round of the Georgia High School Association playoffs.
Two all-Gwinnett matchups highlight the second round of the Georgia High School Association boys soccer playoffs Wednesday, May 8. Greater Atlanta Christian came in second overall while Norcross placed 24th at the Georgia High School Association meet, which was held May 2-4 in Jefferson, Ga.
Led by individual wins by Tyler Woodrome and Michael Cheeks, Mill Creek won the Class AAAAAA boys track and field championship, held May 2-4 in Jefferson, Ga. Mill Creek finished with 59 points to beat second-place Hillgrove, which had 43. Brookwood (35 points) was third, Shiloh (30) fifth and North Gwinnett (27.5) sixth. The Mill Creek 4x400 relay team, which included Woodrome and Cheeks, also won first place in a time of 3:24.22. Braden Canamare and Allen Eckles were also on that relay team. Norcross High and Greater Atlanta Christian School are among the Gwinnett teams playing in the state baseball playoffs this week. The Georgia High School Association baseball tournament begins Friday, May 3, with first-round double-headers in six classifications. Gwinnett County will be well-represented by 14 teams in five of those divisions. Both Norcross and GAC are playing away games this week. The Blue Devils will be against Johns Creeks in the Class AAAAAA tournament, and the Spartans are aiming for the Class AA title against Pepperell. Greater Atlanta Christian is hosting its first-round games in the Georgia High School Association soccer tournament this week.
Greater Atlanta Christian's girls and boys begin their title defenses this week as the Georgia High School Association soccer tournament opens play throughout the state. Both Spartan teams will be playing at home for the Class AA titles. On Thursday, the ladies will be up against Model, and on Friday, the boys will play against Armuchee. While GAC makes up for two of the county's soccer teams, in all, 27 Gwinnett County teams have qualified in five classifications. See also: Here's the entire list of games involving Gwinnett teams. The contest was shot at Greater Atlanta Christian School and will air nationwide Saturday on CBS.
The best high-flying and long-distance-shooting high school basketball players came to Norcross Friday for the 2013 High School Slam Dunk and 3-Point Championships. The event was held at Greater Atlanta Christian Schools. First up was the 3-point contest. High school seniors across the country lined up behind the arc and had one minute to shoot as many threes as possible. The title of sharpest shooter went to Conner Frankamp of Wichita, Kansas. Frankamp will play basketball for the University of Kansas next fall. The Harlem Globetrotters provided entertainment in between the contests for the arena full of GAC students.
