The Gwinnett Braves have awarded their $1,000 grant for the month of December to the West Gwinnett Chapter of the Friends of Gwinnett County Public Library.
The Gwinnett Braves have awarded their $1,000 grant for the December month to the West Gwinnett Chapter of the Friends of Gwinnett County Public Library, serving Norcross, Peachtree Corners and Duluth branches, according to a news release. The “Season of Giving” themed grant, aimed at organizations that benefit youth and education programming, will help fund the GCPL’s Prime Time Family Reading Time, a literary program for children and their families. The Gwinnett Braves has awarded their September grant to the Norcross High School Foundation for Excellence. According to a press release, the All About Kids-themed grant is worth $1,000 and will help fund Norcross' After School Matters program. The program aims to make after-school time productive and fun for Norcross students. Its mission is to increase the graduation rate, prepare students for a career or college, cultivate different talents, lift self-confidence and decrease risky behavior. The Governor's Office of Highway Safety has awarded the Norcross Police Department a $10,000 public safety partnership grant. The incentive grant is designed for smaller law enforcement agences that have partnered with GOHS and excelled making the communities safer, whether it's through participation in highway safety intiatives or patrolling neighborhoods, according to a press release from Nocross PD spokesman Capt. State Farm is running a contest that will give away 40 grants worth $25,000 to different communities through its Cause An Effect program, and Norcross can win of them. Cause An Effect is a youth-led, philanthropic initiative that aims to make communities stronger, safer and better educated, according to a press release. The Atlanta Regional Commission awarded a $48,000 grant to the Gwinnett Village Community Improvement District, according to the Gwinnett Daily Post. The grant could help with pedestrians and bike riders along Indian Trail-Lilburn Road. Landscaping and sidewalks have been on the CID agenda, with a managed-access landscaped median already in the works. Beaver Ridge Elementary School was awarded a $2,000 grant to fully fund a new program called Mastering Math Skills Through Music. The program concentrates on education through the arts, and it was pushed by early intervention teacher Kathy Boyer. "It's like a high-energy, music-movement math skills program," said Boyer. She added that the fun program is geared more for third, fourth and fifth graders, but it has basic addition and subtraction activities that can be used with younger students. Norcross First United Methodist Church received a grant to help them go green and save on energy costs.
Norcross First United Methodist Church is going green. They were recently able to make substantial upgrades to their building’s insulation, estimated to save them tens of thousands of dollars annually on energy costs, with the help of the non-profit Georgia Interfaith Power and Light (GIPL). GIPL awarded them a $12,150 grant, matching the money they put up for the improvements, and has the funding to help other Norcross congregations of every religion analyze their energy use and give grants to make their own improvements. Thanks to GIPL’s innovative program called Power Wise, $600,000 is available to run and fund the project statewide. Gwinnett County Public Schools learned this week that the school district is one of six in the nation selected to participate in the Wallace Foundation’s Principal Pipeline initiative. Included in this initiative is between $7.5 million and $12.5 million in grant money the school district will receive over a five-year period. This money is to be used to develop, hire and support new school principals. Officials said they expect to receive $3.9 million of this money in the first year. The Georgia Department of Transportation announced that the Gwinnett Village CID will receive $35,000 for a landscaping project at the intersection of Brook Hollow Parkway and Mitchell Road along I-85. “These landscaping projects are improving more than just the overall aesthetic of Gwinnett Village,” said Chuck Warbington, executive director for Gwinnett Village CID in a released statement.
