The Greater Atlanta Christian boys won the Class AA title while both teams for Norcross claimed the titles for Class AAAAAA.
It was a successful weekend for basketball teams in Norcross-area schools. On Friday, Greater Atlanta Christian won its third boys basketball state title in four years with a 69-52 win over Bleckley County in the Class AA finals at the Macon Centreplex. The championship was the sixth Georgia High School Association boys hoops title in school history. For the Class AAAAAA title, the Lady Blue Devils beat North Gwinnett 63-42. The Saturday win is the Norcross girls' third GHSA championship in four seasons. After the girls game, the Norcross boys completed an amazing sweep with the defeat of Hillgrove 60-48. The Lady Wolves beat Laney 76-43 in the Class AA basketball girls final of the Georgia High School Association tournament in Macon.
The Wesleyan girls basketball dynasty continued Friday in the Georgia High School Association basketball finals at the Macon Centreplex. See also: The Lady Wolves ran away from Laney in the second half to beat the Lady Wildcats 76-43 in the Class AA championship game, their sixth consecutive state title. The championship ties a state GHSA record first set by Hart County, which won six in a row from 1989 to 1994. Wesleyan has now won 10 championships in 12 seasons under coach Jan Azar. Eleven Gwinnett County football teams have qualified for the Georgia High School Association state playoffs. Eight of those schools are in Class AAAAAA, where the previous two large-school state champions — Grayson (2011) and Brookwood (2010) are in the field. Admission to all GHSA first-round games is $10. Dacula advances with a 17-10 win over the Blue Devils.
Dacula quarterback Rocky Capobianco had tears streaming down his face Friday after the Falcons' first-round playoff game against Norcross. The tears of joy came minutes after he scored the winning touchdown on a 5-yard run with 17 seconds left to lift Dacula to a 17-10 victory over the Blue Devils and advance in the Class AAAAA playoffs. Capobianco's game-winner capped an eight-play, 77-yard drive and propelled the Falcons into a home-field second-round match next week against Newnan, 17-7 winners over Valdosta. High School Football Prediction Norcross (8-2) at Dacula (7-3) The season began for both of these teams with this same matchup on Aug. 18 (a 35-7 Norcross). That was a long time ago, and things have changed for both teams. The win began a 5-0 start for Norcross, which looked like the team to beat in Region 7-AAAAA until back-to-back losses to North Gwinnett and Peachtree Ridge essentially secured third place for the Blue Devils.
