It may seem unusual for two Gwinnett teams to play for a state title — like Saturday's matchup between Norcross and North Gwinnett in the Class AAAAAA Girls Basketball final — but it's happened 28 times before.
We all know Gwinnett County is pretty competitive in Georgia high school sports. Just how competitive? All-time, Gwinnett schools have won or shared 311 Georgia High School Association sports championships, including the boys basketball title won by Dacula in 1938 and 10 more already won this school year. That's not a misprint. Even more telling is how many times county teams have squared off for the big trophy. When North Gwinnett and Norcross high schools meet Saturday for the GHSA Class AAAAAA girls basketball championship, it will be the 29th All-Gwinnett final in state history. The Greater Atlanta Christian boys and both teams for Norcross High won in the basketball quarterfinals this week. The semifinals for the state playoffs is Friday and Saturday at Georgia Tech and Georgia College and State University.

The Greater Atlanta Christian boys and the girls and boys teams for Norcross High, the three Norcross-area basketball teams who competed in the third round of state playoffs, won their games this week and are headed to the semifinals this weekend. The Lady Blue Devils defeated Cherokee 76-43 in their Class AAAAAA game Tuesday. The girls will compete against Langston Hughes at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 2, at Georgia Tech. The NHS boys defeated Berkmar 56-35 Wednesday night. North Cobb is their next competitor, and the semifinals game starts at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Tech. After an all-win start for Norcross teams in the first round of the state playoffs, the second round brought in a mix of losses and victories. Both Norcross High teams were successful in their games last Friday and Saturday. The Lady Blue Devils won 59-51 against Parkview in double overtime, and the boys defeated Archer 69-50 in their 14th straight win. The girls team will play at Cherokee on Tuesday, Feb. 26, and the boys will host Berkmar on Wednesday. While Greater Atlanta Christian boys took home a win against Spencer with a score of 88-56, the girls weren't so lucky. The three Spartans at Greater Atlanta Christian officially committed to the colleges Wednesday for National Signing Day.
Three football players for Greater Atlanta Chrisitan School officially committed to colleges Wednesday for National Signing Day. The Spartans include team captain Andrew Lewis, wide receiver Peter Whiteneck and offensive lineman Daniel Yoon. Lewis, who was the first to sign at the GAC event in the Student Family Center, committed to the Virginia Military Institute. Lewis plays the tight end and defensive end for the Norcross team. He was injured early in the season but was able to finish the season strong and help the Spartans advance to the GHSA AA semi-finals, according to head coach Tim Hardy. Greater Atlanta Christian Schools' Brianna Cummings reached the legendary mark last weekend against the Lovett School.
A girls basketball player for Greater Atlanta Christian School made her 1,000th career point last weekend. Brianna Cummings, a junior and guard, reached the legendary mark in GAC's game against the Lovett School on Friday. Before the game, the 5'11" Cummings was only 8 points away from the big number, but she ended up scoring 17 points, according to Greater Atlanta Christian. The Norcross-area school defeated Lovett 62-32 in the Region 6AA game. According to Max Preps, Cummings ranks No. 17 in the state. She resides in Lawrenceville. Despite the team's win against Lovett, GAC fell in the following three games, where they played against Southwest DeKalb on Saturday, Carver on Monday and Southwest Atlanta Christian on Tuesday. Greater Atlanta Christian School is in the works of constructing an institution for secondary education in the African country.
Greater Atlanta Christian School is in the works of building a sister school, but it won't be anywhere in Georgia or the U.S.: It'll be in Rwanda. Since 2007, a team from GAC has been working with the president and government of the African country to create the Central Africa School of Excellence, which will be open to students on the seventh grade level and above. Aside from the simple offer of higher education, one of the goals for the Rwanda school is to build global connections, said Dr. David Fincher, the president of GAC. Since the mid-90s, GAC has completed as many as 25 mission trips to various continents a year, but the school wanted to do something more long term. The 2012 Georgia Sportswriters Association All-State Football Teams were released this week, and a few football gems from the Norcross area made it in. According to the Gwinnett Daily Post citing the Associated Press, players from both Norcross High and Greater Atlanta Christian were on the teams for their respective classes. The Class AAAAAA team had six players from the Blue Devils, and the Spartans had four football players in Class AA. Norcross head coach Keith Maloof was named the Coach of the Year and running back Alvin Kamara received the Offensive Player of the Year title.
