Church Remembers Norcross Victim of I-285 Fatality

Raul Maldonado-Lopez, of Norcross, was killed in an accident in Cobb County just five days before his 29th birthday.

Members of Iglesia Asamblea del Principe de Paz in Clarkston, Ga. are feeling the loss of their friend Raul Maldonado-Lopez, 28, of Norcross, after he was killed in a car accident on I-285 west of the Chattahoochee River in Cobb County last week. “When you first met him he inspired you,” said IAPP’s Co-Pastor Monica Romero. “Even though you didn’t know him. Our pianist in the church—he hasn’t even been here for a year, but he said, ‘In the time that I’ve known him I feel like I’ve known him forever.’” A native of Tapachula, Mexico, Maldonado-Lopez had been a member of Iglesia Asamblea del Principe de Paz since 2002. Gwinnett Police Seeking Witnesses in Fatal Car Wreck

The Gwinnett County Police Accident Investigation Unit is asking anyone who witnessed a fatal car accident in Lawrenceville, Ga. on Tuesday to contact investigators.

Gwinnett County Police Department's Accident Investigation Unit is asking anyone who witnessed or has information regarding a fatal accident that happened in Lawrenceville on Tuesday to please contact authorities. The accident, which involved a Loganville, Ga. man, happened at about 12:42 p.m. April 10 at the intersection of Sugarloaf Parkway and Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road. A 22-year-old Sugar Hill man died in the wreck. According to a press release, investigators report that a white 1998 Chevrolet, driven by Kenneth Hayden, 22, of Sugar Hill, was stopped on Sugarloaf Parkway waiting to turn left onto Lawrenceville-Suwanee Rd. Pedestrian Killed on Peachtree Industrial Blvd

According to news reports, part of the interstate was closed during the morning rush--but is now reopened.

A man walking along Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, just south of Norcross in Doraville, was fatally hit by a tractor trailer and several other vehicles, according to multiple news reports.  The man was walking in the northbound lane, just north of I-285 and was struck just after 5 a.m. Reports say that the highway was not reopened until after 9 a.m.  Doraville Police investigators told the AJC that they are trying to figure out why a pedestrian would be walking on this busy part of the highway, which is forbidden and has no sidewalks.

Norcross Woman Killed on I-285, Local Man Charged with Manslaughter

Updated July 12, 9:04 a.m. Cobb County Police are investigating a hit-and-run traffic accident that occurred on I-285 early Sunday morning, resulting in the death of a 23-year-old woman. Yasmel Garcia-Victoria and Michael Swetell, both of Norcross, were travelling west on I-285 when their vehicle came to a sudden stop in the emergency lane near Cobb Parkway, according Cobb County Police. They both exited the vehicle and apparently began to argue. Garcia-Victoria was struck by a vehicle in the right lane, then hit by several other cars. Only one driver called officials to report the incident, according to a police brief. Cobb County Police told the Atlanta-Journal Constitution that Swetell, who was Garcia-Victoria's boyfriend, had a history…

Norcross Motorcyclist Killed in Accident on I-85

Cyclist killed after striking construction trailer parked alongside interstate.

A Norcross man was killed last week in an accident on I-85 near the Mall of Georgia exit. Gwinnett County Police say John Bobbitt, 43, of Norcross was riding his motorcycle southbound on I-85 when he began swerving. According to witnesses, Bobbitt suddenly swerved to the right and left the roadway. Bobbitt was traveling on the paved shoulder when he struck a parked construction billboard trailer. Upon striking the trailer, Bobbitt was ejected from the motorcycle. He died as a result of injuries sustained in the collision. The June 1 accident remains under investigation.
