Editor's Note: The following is a Letter to the Editor written by Demetria Gholston, a Norcross resident who lost her son in a drunk driving accident. I am voicing my outrage of the behavior of Fox 5 Atlanta news anchor Amanda Davis. On Thursday, April 25, 2013, she announced that she was retiring but never took the opportunity to acknowledge or apologize for her DUI. Throughout the years, she has reported numerous stories of families who have lost a loved one through the hands of a drunk driver. She even reported mine. How can we continue to sit idle and allow this to happen? It is because of this that celebrities, politicians and other leaders are able to run free after committing a crime. From Midtown Patch FOX 5 News anchor Amanda Davis faces multiple charges including DUI following a wrong way, head-on crash early Sunday morning on Piedmont Avenue in Midtown. According to an Atlanta police report, Davis allegedly was driving her vehicle north in the southbound lanes of Piedmont before hitting another car just before 12:30 a.m. Neither driver was injured in the accident that resulted in significant damage to both cars. According to the report, Davis admitted to consuming alcohol but refused to take a breathalyzer test. In a addition to DUI, Davis was charged with failure to maintain lane and reckless driving. The running back said he consumed the alcohol at Magic City in Atlanta after Monday's Falcons-Broncos game.
After initially telling a Gwinnett Police officer early Tuesday that he had nothing to drink, Atlanta Falcons running back Michael Turner said he had "approximately 5 shots" at a bar in Atlanta before his DUI arrest, according to the arrest report. The arrest report, which was released Wednesday, quoted Turner as saying that he had consumed the alcohol at Magic City in Atlanta about 3 a.m. "after getting there late." Asked by the arresting officer if the shots were normal size, Turner said the shots were "in cups, not glasses." According to yelp.com, Magic City is a strip club located on Forsyth Street. Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith said that he is "disappointed" by Michael Turner's arrest on DUI charges in unincorporated Norcross, according to a media report. ESPN reported that Smith met with the running back in Smith's office after learning of the arrest early Tuesday on I-85 in unincorporated Norcross. "First and foremost, any time a player sheds negatively on our football team and on our organization, we are very disappointed," Smith said. Atlanta Falcons starting running back Michael Turner was arrested early Tuesday, Sept. 18, on charges of DUI and speeding in unincorporated Norcross. According to a Gwinnett County Police press release, 30-year-old Turner, of Suwanee, was observed driving a black Audi "at a high rate of speed' on northbound I-85 near Indian Trail Road. The traffic stop took place on I-85 near Steve Reynolds Boulevard. He was traveling 97 mph in 65 mph zone, according to police. A member of the DUI task force made contact, and Turner identified himself as a member of the Atlanta Falcons. Updated 5:38 p.m., April 2 An Atlanta Braves relief pitcher was arrested early Monday on I-85 near Lawrenceville on a DUI charge, Gwinnett Sheriff's records show. Christhian Martinez, 30, was booked into the Gwinnett Detention Center at 4:24 a.m., and he was released on bond at 10:41. Gwinnett Police Cpl. Jake Smith told the Gwinnett Daily Post that Martinez had a blood-alcohol content of 0.130, above the legal limit of 0.080. Martinez was stopped on I-85 near Steve Reynolds Boulevard when his vehicle was spotted weaving and driving 40 mph, the Daily Post reported. Georgia State Patrol is reporting that Gwinnett County Sheriff's Deputy Douglas Dwayne Mattox, 50, from Watkinsville, was charged with driving under the influence and and following too closely following a three-vehicle crash at about 12:15 p.m. Thursday in Loganville. Blood test results are pending. According to a press release from GSP, Mattox was operating a 2006 Ford F150 pick-up truck belonging to the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department when he struck the rear of a 2004 Toyota Highlander, which then struck the rear of a 2005 Ford Focus. The driver of the Toyota complained of an injury but, according to the report, was not transported to the hospital. An accident that occured early Saturday morning just outside of unincorporated Norcross resulted in the death of a 43-year-old Atlanta resident. Gwinnett Police say that alcohol played a role in the fatal collision. At approximately 2 a.m. on Sat., Aug. 27, Luis Chauca-Morales was travelling on Buford Highway, attempting to turn left on Global Forum Boulevard in Doraville, just south of Norcross. Chauca-Morales failed to yield to oncoming traffic and was struck by a car, according to a police release. The passenger in the Chauca-Morales car, 43-year-old Mario Villa-Anguerro, sustained life-threatening injuries. Masino, of a Yosemite Court address in Suwanee, was released on bond just before midnight Wednesday, jail records show. A traffic accident early yesterday morning on Jimmy Carter Boulevard resulted in the death of 24-year-old Starkesha Magee. Gwinnett Police have arrested the driver of the car she was in and charged her with DUI, vehicular homicide in the 1st degree and failure to maintain a lane. Police say that Chanae Woodards, 21, was driving a Honda CRV east on Jimmy Carter Boulevard around 4:30 a.m. on July 21 when she struck a Toyota Camry. The driver, 20-year-old Frank Twum, was attempting to turn south on Corley Road. Woodards was “negotiating a curved portion of the road, swerved into the center lane and struck (the Camry) head-on,” according to a police statement.
