Diamond DeShields Named National Girls Basketball Player of the Year
MaxPreps has given the 2013 title to the senior guard at Norcross High.
Norcross High's Diamond DeShields has been named MaxPreps' 2013 National Girls Basketball Player of the Year. The senior guard, who's headed to the University of North Carolina in the fall, helped Norcross High win three state titles during her high school career, including this year's Class AAAAAA Title after defeating North Gwinnett. MaxPreps also notes that DeShields was named to both the McDonald’s and the Women's Basetball Coaches Association's (WBCA) all-American teams this past year. “It’s gratifying,” she told the online news site. “I’ve done more than I wanted. Norcross' DeShields Named Miss Georgia Basketball, Naismith HS Player of the Year
The Atlanta Tipoff Club announced the two honors this week.
Norcross High's Diamond DeShields, a star player and guard for the Lady Blue Devils, recently received two high honors: Miss Georgia Basketball and the Naismith Girl’s High School Player of the Year. The Atlanta Tipoff Club announced the news in press releases this week during the state playoffs. DeShields, the 6'2" senior dedicated to the University of North Carolina, was given the prestigious Naismith Award because of her outstanding performance during the 2013 basketball season. The decision came from a group of basketball journalists from around the nation who make up the Naismith Awards high school voting academy, according to the release. NHS Girls Basketball Players Nominated for McDonald's Game
Diamond DeShields and Shayla Cooper of Norcross High have a chance to play in the prestigious high school all-star game.
Nine high school basketball players from Gwinnett County, two of which are from Norcross High, have been nominated to play in the annual McDonald's All-American all-star games later this year. Seniors Diamond DeShields and Shayla Cooper of the Lady Blue Devils were both picked. Cooper is dedicated to Georgetown University, according to ESPN. DeShields, a shooting guard, is signed on to go to the University of North Carolina. She also earned the MVP title in the U17 World Championship team, which won first place this year by defeating Spain in August. Diamond DeShields Picked for USA Today High School Basketball Team
The Norcross High senior shooting guard is part of a 10-player national team.
The USA Today High School Sports Preseason American Family Insurance ALL-USA Girls High School Basketball Team has unveiled its 10 players, and two players are from Gwinnett County, including one from Norcross High. Diamond DeShields, a senior at Norcross and a 6-1 shooting guard, is the only returning player from the 2011-2012 team. Committed to the University of North Carolina, DeShields was named to the 2011 ALL-USA second team as a junior. She led her team to a 26-6 record and a state semi-final finish with an average of 21.8 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game last year. Norcross' Diamond DeShields Named MVP in World Championship
The USA Women's basketball team wins against Spain for the gold medal in the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship.
The USA Basketball Women’s U17 World Championship team beat Spain on Sunday in order to win the gold medal for the year, according to USA Basketball. Norcross High's Diamond DeShields earned the MVP award for the tournament. After beating Spain 75-62, the USA team took home first place in the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship at Sporthallen Zuid in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. DeShields ended up grabbing eight rebounds and giving out five assists during the game. Throughout the entire season, the offense guard set two USA highs with her 14.8 ppg. set and 108 field goal attempts. The U17 team is the third U.S. National team for DeShields, a junior at Norcross. Norcross High basketball player Diamond DeShields committed to the North Carolina Tar Heels on Saturday, according to ESPN. DeShields is the No. 3 propsect in the class of 2013, and is the Tar Heels' highest-ranked junior commitment to date, according to the article.
