Norcross Business Spotlight: Strutt Your Mutt Grooming

Every other week, Norcross Patch profiles a different business in the area. This week, we talk to Tanera Swan, who has opened a dog grooming business in her home in Norcross.

Strutt Your Mutt Grooming has been in business about a month, but on Monday, the phone was ringing off the hook. A former veterinary technician, Tanera Swan has opened a dog grooming business in her home in Norcross. After offering a three-day coupon special, she is booked for the week. It's a good problem to have. Swan has spent her entire career working with animals. With a bachelor’s of science degree in veterinary technology, she worked in vet clinics for 10 years before following her “entrepreneurial spirit.” She is trained in dog grooming standards, having attended grooming school, and specializes in grooming small- to mid-size dogs. With her Pekingese dog Princess close by -- a stray she rescued six or seven years ago -- she talks …

Former Social Worker Finds Joy in Fabric

Lisa Paras "kisses frogs" to make princes of fabric deals for her customers.

Lisa Paras kisses a lot of frogs to make her customers happy at Frugal Fabrics on Jimmy Carter Boulevard. Well, not really, but that’s what she calls it when she searches for and find fabrics for less and passes them on to her customers as “princes” to her clients at her popular fabric and design shop in Norcross. “I think ‘frugal’ indicates a frame of mind,” Paras says. “It’s about spending less to get the look you want and that is totally possible, even in today’s market.” Paras didn’t come to fabrics and design as a career choice to begin with, though. A trained clinical social worker, she was living in Miami when Hurricane Andrew came through, leaving destruction and depression in its path. “It was overwhelming to be there, in a city …

Changing Careers Leads to New Success

Even in a down economy, Dan Meehan is a great example of a promising career transition.

Ten years ago, Dan Meehan was among the countless number of Americans riding an economic roller coaster.  Stock market instability and high unemployment created great uncertainty. Jobs were drying up as many found themselves newly out of work. Meehan had spent more than 30 years with technology companies large and small, mostly in sales positions. He then worked for years as a recruiter, finding sales professionals for Atlanta tech firms. “It took two to three years before that market came back to even be able to really make any living at all,” Meehan said of the 2001 situation. Fast forward to 2008, and Meehan was again witnessing an all-too-familiar scene. A stock market crash and joblessness were once again the dominant economic …

Filling Up Empty Office Parks—By Offering Some Rent-Free

Local entrepreneur seeks to foster Norcross tech innovation with grants, office space—and guidance.

How would you like to have a modern, modular workspace—surrounded by innovators in the technology field—for one year free of charge, no strings attached? Local serial entrepreneur Leland Strange could make that happen for some young companies. He, along with Gwinnett Innovation Park, are taking applicants for their new Nspire Program, which would give budding tech companies free workspace and professional guidance, as well as make them eligible for $100,000 in grant funds to build their business.  They just want to give area entrepreneurs a “fighting chance” of becoming successful in tough times, according to their materials. “We designed our Nspire Program to provide entrepreneurs with a chance to focus on their business for a year …

Sujung Sauna: A Unique Korean Spa

Owner says the spa started for passers-by but has become a local hangout and popular place to beautify.

Life-sized porcelain goddesses stand gracing the Sujung Suana's exterior, just minutes from Historic Norcross. Fittingly, one the services offered is the "Goddess Body Treatment," a full-service Asian massage and scrub provided at the sauna. The idea for this Korean-style sauna originated with Byoung Kang after living in Norcross for some time and realizing that Atlanta was a frequent pit-stop for travelers going between Florida and New York or Virginia. Sujung Sauna, which is open 24 hours a day, would offer the visitors a place to relax, eat and sleep for a relatively low-cost admission. Visitors take note: Korean-style saunas are not for everyone. Upon entrance, visitors are asked to leave their shoes at the door and given sauna …
