The White House has released a state-by-state breakdown of what the budget cuts could mean. In Gwinnett County, school district officials say it means losing critical dollars for Title I programs.
Gwinnett County Public Schools officials have released a statement regarding the impending across-the-board federal budget cuts, known as sequestration. In the statement, GCPS Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks, said the cuts would cost the state's largest school district approximately $3.4 million, Title I monies, and allocations for special education. (Read the full statement below.) Earlier this month, board members Carole Boyce and Mary Kay Murphy traveled to Washington, D.C., to fight the budget cuts. Officials planning five-day, 40-hour week sometime soon.
Get ready for your local Gwinnett Public Library branch to be open fewer days and hours this fall. GCPL officials described the changes Monday as part of the budget-review process with county government leaders in Lawrenceville. The plan includes a "non-tax revenue" plan that could raise $4 million annually. GCPL Chairman Philip Saxton said library officials were "shocked" when their funding was reduced 15 percent, to the current level of $16.1 million. With the current reductions and increasing dependence on non-government funds, "we hope you will give some back." Furloughs are an option the county is reviewing to help reduce an $18 million deficit.
Gwinnett County Commissioners are considering making four holidays unpaid furlough days for county workers to help eliminate the county's $18 million budget deficit. The county announced Friday that converting Independence Day, Labor Day, the Friday after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Eve to unpaid furlough days would save about $2.8 million, and that all measures being considered would leave Gwinnett about $2.6 million short of covering its general fund shortfall. The commissioners will consider the measures at the March 1 meeting. Libraries provide valuable services for the citizens. Many folks do not have home coumpters and use the library computers to do what they need to get accomplished in the libarary. Older americans like myself use the library several times a week to get books for entertainment. Please do not cut hours on weekends. Just set hours for M W F and T T S S and post.
