Transportation investment act will help future generations according to Norcross Mayor Bucky Johnson.
Gwinnett County citizens had the opportunity on June 20 to share their priorities for regional transportation projects during a telephone town hall meeting hosted by the Atlanta Regional Roundtable. Citizens who participated in the call were polled regarding regional transportation investment, light rail and specific local projects. Participants also had the opportunity to ask questions of Gwinnett County commission chairman Charlotte Nash and Norcross Mayor Bucky Johnson who heads the Atlanta Regional Transportation Roundtable executive committee. “This is a really important issue that we have potentially in front of us next year,” Nash said. “Those of us who sit on the regional roundtable are anxious to hear what the priorities of the …

Of the $1.28 billion in Norcross area projects submitted, only one idea was tossed: replacing the bridge at Jimmy Carter Boulevard and 85.
Hoping for Gwinnett Light Rail? You might be in luck. A new bridge at 85 and Jimmy Carter? You may have to wait longer. A broad, “unconstrained” wish list of transportation projects has been vetted by the Georgia DOT and was delivered yesterday afternoon to the Transportation Investment Act Executive Committee, with about 30 Gwinnett projects erased from the slate. The Committee, chaired by Norcross Mayor Bucky Johnson, has the challenging task of putting together a final list for voters, who will make the ultimate call in July 2012 on a ten-year, one-penny sales tax for transportation projects. Ten Metro Atlanta regions submitted their suggestions in April, with the City of Norcross and the Gwinnett Village CID putting in $1.28 billion…

Norcross Police have not been able to use radar since Jan. 1, leading to about $89,000 less in speeding fines compared to the same time last year.
Since the Service Delivery Dispute between Gwinnett County and the city municipalities remained unresolved at the year end, some contracts were not renewed on Jan. 1. The City of Norcross Police Department has not been able to use radar to stop speeders in their tracks so far in 2011. “Safety is the number one concern,” said Mayor Bucky Johnson of the situation, citing busy pedestrian crossings around the city. “Then, of course, the financial concern comes second.” According to court records, 443 speeding tickets were issued in Norcross between Jan. and April 2010, resulting in about $119,200 in assessed fines. In the same time period in 2011, 274 speeding tickets were issued for about $29,800 in assessed fines, about $89,400 less in …

Over $1.28 billion in projects submitted by the City of Norcross and the Gwinnett Village CID made the Gwinnett cut and will now be considered for inclusion on a combined list by the Atlanta Regional Roundtable. The projects include: -Buford Highway at Jimmy Carter Boulevard Intersection Improvement, submitted by the Gwinnett Village CID and the City of Norcross. $15 million -Heavy Rail Extension, from Doraville MARTA station to Oakcliff (Dekalb County), submitted by the City of Norcross and the Gwinnett Village CID. $140 million -Hillcrest/…

Some residents and officials say that even if the annexation does cost the city, they want to move forward with the Mitchell Road area annexation.
Updated Oct. 18, 2011 This is part of Norcross Patch’s five-part series about the potential annexation of an area roughly along Mitchell Road up to I-85 into the City of Norcross, "rounding off" the borders of the city limits. We'll re-run the series this week, in preparation for the Nov. 8 vote. We've already looked at code enforcement. In later days we'll cover the bottom line for home owners, the long-term vision and crime. If you want to boil an issue down, conventional wisdom tells you to follow the numbers. According to the city fiscal analysis of the proposed annexation, the total cost of servicing the area in the first year, including public works, community development and police service is $824,132, a number that includes a 10 …

The new FedEx Ground location is at Atlantic Blvd and Jimmy Carter Blvd.
A $55 million FedEx Ground facility is coming to Norcross. Ground was broken this morning around 10 a.m., with comments from Norcross Mayor Bucky Johnson, Commissioner Shirley Lasseter as well as Georgia Governor Nathan Deal. The facility, which is just inside the Norcross city limits at Atlantic Blvd and Jimmy Carter Blvd, is set to open on September 12, with an estimated 240 employees and 75 independent contractors. “If the stars align, there will eventually be 550 employees,” said Nick Masino, Vice President of Economic Development at the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce. Johnson pointed out that despite being just 5 square miles, Norcross has a healthy mix of residential and commercial properties. “This adds to our economic diversity,” he…

Bucky Johnson at the center of the effort to bring public transportation to Gwinnett.
Area mayors will soon be releasing a statement about their desire for a regional transportation authority, according to Randy Meacham, Managing Director of the Gwinnett Municipal Association. The statement may be out before the weekend, or may be held up until early next week. The mayors will not be endorsing a specific bill, but will be encouraging lawmakers to do something in this legislative session, Meacham anticipates. “This really, really is important stuff,” said Meacham. “I think that folks are ready to do it—and do it in the right way.” Bucky Johnson, Mayor of Norcross, serves two roles in the larger effort. He is chair of a Transportation Roundtable and also serving on an executive committee for the entire metro area, which is …

Bucky Johnson stepped down from his voting position on a regional committee, but will still be a non-voting chairman.
Norcross Mayor Bucky Johnson resigned from his role as a voting member of an executive committee so that Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed could slip into the spot. Now Johnson will be the non-voting chairman of the committee, which will create a list of regional transportation projects that might funded by a referendum in Aug. of 2012. Johnson said in a release that while he was honored to be on the five-member committee, he thinks its better to have balance in terms of regional representation. The committee will now be comprised of Mayor Reed, Decatur Mayor Bill Floyd, Kennesaw Mayor Mark Mattews, Henry County Chairman B.J. Mathis and Douglas County Chairman Tom Worthan. The regional sales tax referendum, the Transportation Investment Act, …

Bucky Johnson will be part of a 10-person committee to define projects for the possible one-cent regional sales tax to ease traffic woes.
Mayor Bucky Johnson was appointed to an executive committee that will try to define what's to come for a one-cent, 10-year regional sales tax to be used for transportation, a measure that will be put to a vote in 2012. "Our assignment is to take a look at the best projects to break the gridlock in the metro area," said Johnson in a release. The Atlanta Regional Roundtable, part of the Transportation Investment Act, decided on the committee in their first meeting on Friday, Dec. 17. The roundtable will attempt to define project criteria, so the Georgia Department of Transportation can create a "wish list" of transportation projects. Johnson is one of three metro Atlanta mayors to be named to the committee. He said in a release that he …

Shoot, just the code enforcement fines alone in that area would probably pay for it! I hate driving down Mitchell Rd. and seeing all the gross houses that aren't taken care of. Do it!   more ›
