Welch had been interim since former principal Bob Jackson passed away in July.
The Gwinnett Board of Education approved Tommy Welch as principal at Meadowcreek High School Thursday night at its regular meeting in Suwanee. Welch had served as the school's interim replacement for Bob Jackson, who passed away suddenly in July of this year. He had been an assistant principal under Jackson. Welch began his Gwinnett teaching career as a social studies teacher at the school in 2003. He moved into the assistant principal role in 2006. He holds both a bachelor's and master's degree from the University of Buffalo. He has attended Piedmont College for his specialist's degree and is currently pursuing a doctorate in philosophy from Mercer University. He also graduated from the school system's 2009 Quality-Plus Leader Academy.

Gwinnett School announced last night that Tommy Welch will serve as the interim principal of Meadowcreek High School. The appointment is effective today. The county Board of Education called a special meeting to make the decision, which comes in the wake of Principal Bob Jackson's death on Monday. CEO/Superintendant J. Meadowcreek, community loses a caring principal who aimed high. Services will be held Friday.
When I was a young student at Berkmar High School, my theatre class decided to put on a lunchtime show. The idea was a little ambitious: Advertise the show in the cafeteria all week, and then get administrators to allow the students to come into the theatre with their lunches. I had to approach then-Assistant Principal Bob Jackson to request a relaxing of the rules. I remember our conversation was warm and positive. The show was a go. The respected educator passed away yesterday afternoon, after leaving work ill.
Updated 9:01 a.m. Meadowcreek High School principal Ladeadrick "Bob" Jackson died yesterday afternoon. He fell ill while working at the school, according to Gwinnett Schools spokesperson Jorge Quintana. The school called 911 and he was taken to a local hospital, where he later passed away, according to GCPS. Nothing else is known about the cause of his death. "He will be sorely missed, and especially by the Meadowcreek High School community," said Gwinnett Schools CEO/Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks in a statement.
