Peachtree Corners Art Fest Moving to Berkeley Lake

Event organizers are working with the Berkeley Lake city leaders to stage the event at a location on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.

The inaugural Peachtree Corners Art Fest, planned for Oct. 13 - has a new name - and a new venue for the one day festival. The event organizer, Jay Lowe, announced the name and location change recently. The event will now be held at a location on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in the city limits of Berkeley Lake, thus the name change. Its new name - Peachtree Corners Art Fest at Berkeley Lake - reflects the location change, but Lowe said there will be many Peachtree Corners local artists, restaurants and other businesses who will have display booths at the event. The decision to move the event Lowe said was because Jay Bird Alley, the original location for the event, could not be closed to traffic. Lowe presented the idea and information …

Legislative Session Ends, Berkeley Lake Annexation Bill Dies in House

The controversial H.B. 956 which would have annexed some 131 properties from Peachtree Corners into the city limits of Berkeley Lake does not pass.

The Georgia General Assembly ended Thursday and so did the city of Berkeley Lake's chance to annex 131 commercial properties that were slated to be part of the new city of Peachtree Corners. The bill was introduced by State Rep. Tom Rice and Senator David Shafer in an effort to satisify both sides of what was building into a heated issue between the neighboring cities. Berkeley Lake wanted to add to its tax base and began annexing adjacent commercial properties last summer that had been designated to be a part of Peachtree Corners. Without a government in place to speak in its behalf, Peachtree Corners had no representation to answer Berkeley Lake's actions. Berkeley Lake leaders continued its annexing efforts after the Nov. 8 referendum …

Berkeley Lake Moves to Annex Peachtree Corners Properties

City leaders are seeking to add commercial and residential properties slated to become part of the new City of Peachtree Corners.

On Thursday, Nov. 17 in its scheduled council meeting, the City of Berkeley Lake moved to annex 55 commercial properties along with 15 residential properties into its city limits. The annexation has some in Peachtree Corners questioning the decision by Berkeley Lake as the annexations took place nine days after the Nov. 8 referendum was passed by voters approving the incorporation of the City of Peachtree Corners. The City of Norcross had launched its own campaign to annex businesses in into the city limits, but asserted that the deadline to turn in an application was Sept. 15, to give time for paperwork to make through the proper channels before the Nov. 8 vote on cityhood for Peachtree Corners resident.  Mark Middleton, an attorney …

Governor Signs New Gwinnett BOE, BOC Maps

Democratic legislator plans to continue challenging the maps on the grounds of minority disenfranchisement.

With a stroke of Gov. Nathan Deal's pen, Gwinnett County's proposed new maps for the school board and county commission are on their way to Washington, DC, for federal review. A Democratic state senator, who had asked Deal to veto the maps on grounds of minority disenfranchisement, said he plans to continue his challenge of the maps, which were redrawn by the Georgia General Assembly using 2010 Census data. "I'll be submitting comments," said State Sen. Curt Thompson (D-Tucker), who maintains his GOP colleagues should have drawn a majority African-American district for the Gwinnett County Board of Education and the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners in south Gwinnett. Neither of the boards has African-American members. Comments are the…
